So i bought my bike a little while ago, And it was a smoker, and had knocking in the engine how ever it does'nt sound like the slap from a stretched cam chain. It's more of a knock-ping sound the seller told me this was normal of all older hondas "im sure its not" and i just read somewhere online that it could be pre - detenation?, also when doing a complete top end rebuild i plan on getting new gaskets, rings, piston, cam, cam chain, cam tensioner and rocker if needed, i remember seeing in someones post that the older ATC's didnt use cam bearings and this could possibly easy job into looking for a new head.

Can you tell me where exactly the noise is coming from? Knocking can be camshaft end play or loose cam sprocket bolts if it's coming from the top. If it's more of a ticking noise it's your valve train. Detonation is more of a pinging or rattle noise. So if you could find the exact spot on figure out what exact noise it is, we can troubleshoot.

You're already covering everything except the rod, this is simple,at idle,it will knock. It is a DEEPER sound if you've been around engines. Not a slap,or tap,...a knock. Anyhow, when you rebuild it,pull up and down on the rod, there should be NO play. Side to side, yes,up and down,None. Fresh bore, piston and rings, timing chain if necesssary, valve job, good to go!
