View Full Version : Recoil starter and Decompression cable assembly.

I was wondering if anyone on here had either a recoil starter with all the decompression goodies to go along with it for sale, or the decompression cable and decompression parts that go inside the starter lying around for sale.

My starter is missing the cable, hook plate, recoil backing plate, cable grommet, and the hook plate cushion. Not sure if there is another assembly that mounts on the motor for the decompression cable. If so, I would need that too.

Thanks for any replies,

Justin

I'm sure I don't. I was going to look on Ebay for you (not that you can't do that yourself), but what machine is it for?

I've got a 200s one that has the plastic thingie, but is missing a bunch of hardware. I've been meaning to buy the parts and fix it for when I do my AutoX project.

It's an 85 Honda 200S. I believe I have the Hook plate (the plastic ring insert). I just don't have the backing plate or gasket. Nor do I have the decomp. cable parts.

I found an 84 on ebay for buying or parting... asked the dude if he had that stuff on there. If so I can get the whole thing from him hopefully.

I've been messing with my three wheeler and it's a pain to start without it. Sometimes it's ok but I don't like it when it snaps out of my hand, hurts a little lol.

I have an oil leak in the top end. Gonna try and torque it a bit more to see if that is the case. If not, I'll do a compression test to see if maybe it's too high. My buddy gave me a piston that was for his 200X, said it was the same piston but I don't know. I figured if the piston wasn't made for the 200s, it wouldn't have fit in the cylinder hole.

Gonna maintenance my valves to see if that won't get it to start up easier.

Thanks for the reply : ),

Justin

Mine is a spare 85 200s engine that I was going to use for an AutoX project. I have the "hook plate" too. I'm not sure about the backing plate. It's been a long time since I took it apart. At one time I had made a list of the parts I needed, and it seemed like they were still available, and if I remember correctly it was going to cost me about $50 for the parts from Bike Bandit. I have never been back to this project, because the guy I bought the engine from turned out to be so shady that I didn't want to put it all together and find out it didn't run. I need to get back to it and find out one way or the other.

The conversation about decompression levers and cables comes up on here every so often, usually with a number of He-Men who claim they don't have any problems starting theirs without it. My 200s has a complete one that works, but every once in a great while it doesn't engage, I can tell you that mine pulls your arm out of its socket if the lever doesn't engage! So call me a wimp, I want my decompression cable working!

My top end leaks on my 200s too, but it's very slight, so I've never bothered to fix it. As far as compression being too high, I don't know why that would happen. If it runs good, let it go! Also, I can't say if it's the same piston, but unless you can find out for sure AND it's a brand new piston, I wouldn't use that one.

Yeah my leak isn't slight... it's ugly and definitely will become a problem if not resolved. Well my buddy said the piston was for an ATC??/??/200 and it was brand new. I think he had his bored out or something and it wasn't the right size so he gave it to me.
I'm gonna check the valves, torque the valve bolts down a little bit more to see if the oil leak stops, get that cable setup and hopefully it will start easier (and not leak) : ).

Yeah I was hoping to get the decomp. cable mounts/holder and accessories fairly cheap from an individual who didn't want them anymore. But I'll probably have to buckle down and pay the OEM prices.

Thanks again,

Justin

DON"T TIGHTEN your bolts! You'll break them! GO easy if you do!. Take the cam cover off, clean the gasket surfaces up,and reseal w a thin, good quality gasket bond. It's not compression,it's age. Unless it is your head gasket, which is not likely. Somewhere here you can download the service manual for free. Good luck!

Ok, It's the gasket between the jug and the valve body. I may just replace that gasket maybe? I'll have to see. Probably be Sunday before I get a chance to pull the motor out and get a good look at it. I have the service manual as well.

Thanks for the info,

Justin

I'll post pics and stuff in this thread if I have problems.

I have a cable and the plastic drum, but I dont have the spring. If you are interested send me an offer through PM. I am pretty sure the grommet is still on the cable.

Yeah, my recoil starter doesn't have a hole in the case for the decompression cable? Where would I link it to if that hole doesn't exist?

Thanks,

Justin

Yeah I could, but the cable could do it for me : /.
