i was wondering if anyone knows a place to send a gas tank to to have them clean out the inside from rust??
i know in the past i have seen a tank on a dirt bike that got rubber coated on the inside. it was great, really fixed it up nice. i was also told to wrap the gas tank in a blanket and/or sheets and pour a bunch of BB's or bird shot in it and tumble it in a drier.
let me know what u guys have done or know. thanks.

theres a method of killing rust with washing soda and a battery charger. i believe its called hydrolosis. ive seen it done before but it was on car suspension parts . not the inside of a gas tank. im sure the bb method would work well to. there are all kind of tank coatings that are for the inside much like you were talking about. its just a matter of what brand you want to go with. ive also seen a chemical that was "safe on skin" that was made for motorcycle tanks but it took up to i believe it was 2 days to kill everything but it worked pretty good too

Muriatic acid, then a neutralizer.
I wasn't all that pleased with Redcoat, people have had KREEM failures. POR seems to work the best in most opinions I've seen......

drywall screws work good with muriatic acid as dirtcrasher said

Nice. I seem to have read something that said Kreem WILL fix holes, but I couldn't find it. The Kreem kit contains the acid and the prep chemical.

go with another tank. I tried cleaning it out but the tank was rusted through and ended up with holes. I got lucky and got one off ebay that was like new inside for $25 plus shipping. Beats buying Kreem and putting the time and effort into it.

Try a pool supply store for the muriatic acid. It's cheap.
Muriatic acid is another name for hydrochloric acid. Take all precautions when using it. Eye protection. Skin protection. Lung protection.

So I would pour the acid in the tank and let it sit?? Or do I cap it and shake? Or put in some sort of abrasive material then shake? And how to neutralize after??

I used the vinegar method and it worked well.

Kreem sucks!! I used it on my Harley tank. It worked great for about 3 years, now the stuff is flaking off and causing all kinds of problems. If you want to know what kind of problems you will have later down the road stuff a plastic grocery bag in your tank and go for a ride.

I bought a POR-15 kit for my 250sx tank. Re-did the inside myself. I highly reccommend it.

KBS Coating sells a tank sealing kit. The kit includes the degreaser, acid wash, and the liner for about $37. It is very easy to do. Their website provides do-it-yourself videos. When I recently lined my tank I just put some drywall screws and some nuts and bolts in the tank when I was using the degreaser to help loosen up any rust in the tank.

As others had mentioned, if the tank is rusted enough you may find some pin holes after cleaning the inside. Not a big deal, KBS sells a putty to fill the holes prior to lining the tank for about $20. I ended up braze welding the holes myself and then lined the tank after I sealed all the holes.
But the real question is if you’re going to spend roughly $60 to seal the tank, assuming there are a few pin holes that need filling, is your time worth the additional cost to invest in a poly tank? Bear in mind the price difference between a white poly tank and a standard red poly tank.

One downside to the POR kits, is if you dent the tank, you are screwed. You cannot get the POR kit back out to fix the tank... I only know this because I trashed my 350X tank and couldnt fix it after.... Kreem you can get back out with MEC or Acetone... Muratic acid can be bought at pretty much any hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards... (any big box store)

Heres what i did for my 200m tank. It was rusted through bad, it drained water faster than the garden hose could put out.
I started by shaking the tank with a bunch of screws, this broke down all the lose rust.
I then cleaned the out side and temporarily patched it with epoxy(quick steel) from walmart. <-- only needed if it leaks EVERYWHERE.
I filled it with white vinigar bought from the grocery store for $1.29 a gallon.
Let it sit for a few days, swishing it around every 12 hours or so.
Drained it washed it out with a little baking soda/water, rinsed it as best as i could. Coated it with acetone to clean it real good. - let it dry
This is the fun part. I took 2oz(1 tube) of Regular JBweld(NOT KWIK) I mixed it with 5teaspoons of acetone(safe according to jbweld), i poured half of it in the tank, 1 side at a time. I tilted the tank, letting the jbweld mix run to all the corners and cracks and holes. Then i poured the other to the otherside doing the same. This gave a nice coat to everything in the tank. You can see where it ran to by the nice shiny dark grey color. I let it set for 3 days, it takes longer to set up with acetone. Once dry, i repeated the process for a 2nd coat.
I then took some time and cleaned up the epoxy from the outside, smoothing it down, shaping it, making it look good. - then that was it, i got lazy lol
Been 4 months and no leaks. The JB weld looks good and is solid, no problems. - It can also be removed with heat(600 degrees+)

jb weld will hold up to gas but only for about 6 months if its in direct contact with the fuel, i jb welded my big red tank about 6 times before breaking down and buying a new tank, it would hold up but after about 6 months it would start blistering and leaking through... but i live in ny where the temp changes alot and I noticed the time of year affected how long it would hold

I'll keep the world updated on mine then, so far, so good. I live in Kansas, temps change about every day, lately been 40degree changes. Monday it was 101, Tuesday it was 60, wtf lol. Temps go as low as 0 in the winter, 100 sometimes 110 in the summer. If it hasn't started leaking, or blistering by then, I'll let you guys know, or as soon as it starts to leak.

They carry that stuff at Harbour Freight. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to have good reviews.
