View Full Version : What CAN'T I powder coat?

Got a GREAT deal on powder coating ;) and want to send in EVERYTHING I can on my '85 200X while it's torn down.

Some of the obvious stuff will be the frame, the pegs, kicker, seat brackets.

My question: what else??? Can the hubs go in? What about the threaded lugs on them? Do I pop them out? How 'bout the spring over the rear shock? Handlebars? levers?

What would be your ultimate laundry list if you were in my position?

Thanks-

Hub studs are just pressed in, they have splines. I just cover the threads with masking tape (to blast) and then high heat tape to powder. If the zinc coating on them is intact, you don't want to blast it off.

Sandblast media and powder get in everything, usually all assemblies should be taken apart, blasted and coated separately.

Anything that gets a bearing in it or on it must be taped off.

There is nothing cheesier than someone blasting a whole footpeg pivot and coating it in one shot.

Beware of cheap PC, coating is easy; The prep work is lengthy and the key to a nice finish......

I've never sent anything to be powder coated. Do I have to tape things off? I know they do the blasting/prep. Should I expect them to be smarter than to coat over threads, etc.? Can I do the front hub, too?

IDK what to expect, you have to discuss it with them...... You will have to TELL THE "don't blast the studs" or remove them prior. Don't assume anything......

Yes, front hub, no issue. Remove all grease and bearings. Here is mine I did:

And the swinger:

Here is some prep work to give you an idea, the green tape is hi heat applied after blasting to seal off areas:

I do all my own aside from frames.......

Man, I like that! So you coat the lower case too? I need to get my hands on a media blaster...

Any more inspirational pics, Dirtcrasher?

What's your trick(s) for brightening up the axle?

If the price is too good to be true..... well you know. Ask questions about prep work up front. It takes a certain amount of time or equipment to prep and coat properly. Unless it's a buddy job, there is a good chance they are cutting corners somewhere. As far as what you can coat, pretty much anything that can stand the temp of curing. Even wood, glass and some plastics can be coated. Plugging tapped holes, capping studs and masking mating surfaces is a must and the parts have to be clean, really really clean. Years and years of dried grease and oil trapped in the hidden places turns to liquid at 400* and runs out of all the cracks and crevasses. That's about the most you can do as the customer, make sure everything is as clean as possible. Blasting days before something is coated just opens the door for surface rust to start and contaminants to get on everything from handling.
Nice pics DC, here's some of mine.
