split the cases on my 83 200x yesterday and everything was good except the RH end of the countershaft. (and the LH mainshaft ball bearing needs to get pulled, both are blind of course!!) The shaft end has corrosion. I found the part number for the needle bearing and got that out of the case half, (HK1512 is the part number BTW). Is a corroded counter shaft a common thing?

I've seen it many times with car/truck transmissions.
Usually cause by condensation, hot and cold cycles.
If it's just the end where it fits into the case and has no motion, it should be ok.
If it's where the bearings or gears ride, obviously not good.
Wear and pitting usually occur on the power side of the shafts
and can sometimes be rotated to a different clock position but not sure about the x
specifically.
Might be easy to find an oem replacement?
or a local machine shop might be able to make one cheaper. idk
I have a whiney countershaft in an 85BR that I'd rather not deal with
so I understand.
I think we've even welded a few and re machined them.

Thanks, I got the new bearing today, and I polished up the shaft, I think its ok. The main pitting it not really where the needles ride ... too much!

Needle bearings need to be on a perfectly sized an ground shaft, or they will fail.........

Yeah, but don't they use needle bearings on items that roll and come back, but never make revolutions? They use needles on kicker shafts, gear drum shafts, and swingarms. Spinning parts like the crank & tranny shafts use ball bearings. I've never seen a needle bearing on a spinning shaft, although it may very well be.

the counter shaft (the one the chain drive sprocket is on) one end is a big ball bearing, and the other end is a little girly needle bearing set. Is this the counter shaft the one that is getting hard to find?
