Ok guys, so I am the newb to the 250r trikes..
I don't know much of the history of this trike such as what engine mods it has so but I will dig into it a bit as time goes and figure it out.
My plan is to clean, lube, adjust everything and ride it..maybe mods or restore later.
So to start the guy I got it from gave me a bottle of oil..KLOTZ 2 Stroke Racing Synthetic. I assume good oil, is this the best or is there something else I should use? I know this will start alot of opinion discussion, but I gotta start somewhere..
I notice the machine produces a smell quit different from other 2 strokes I have owned and that the bottle says it contains 20% Castor oil. Is this normal for racing oils and what exactly does the castor oil do?? And what type of gas should I buy for this trike?

if it's been running klotz then just keep useing it. klotz is a good 2 stroke mix. as for gas i'll use premium.

Now the premix sticker says 20:1, why are you suggesting 32:1 kooleo?

That's good that somebody started a thread on oil. There aren't too many threads in this forum on oil.

Your posts make my day.
And to answer the question that has many answers, Most motorcycle/atv 2 stroke mixes are fine. I use Golden Spectrum myself.
As for Ratio 32:1 is 32 units of gas for every 1 unit or oil.
So 20:1 is heavy on the oil which equals less performance and more lubrication. (lots of smoke, more reliability due to the high level of oil, but also more fouled plugs)
Some people do the 50:1 which is a bit extreme, this works but rebuilds will happen one way or another.
I have been on 32-35:1 for the past 3 years on my lightly built 250r, still runs great and haven't blown a piston.

Castor oil does produce that certain 2-strike smell. I bought one of my FL350 odyssey's that had castor and it had that smell. I strictly only use AMS OIL in all my 2-strokes.
The reason they say 20:1 is because back then the oil was not as high quality or synthetic like today. I run 50:1 in everything an that's not extreme at all. The oil is designed for that. My buddy has an '85 250R and he runs 80:1 with Ams oil and NEVER has had any problems.

Oh and 93 octane ONLY!
If u r running less the 40:1 or 50:1 u r really loosing out on possible added performance. Not saying it won't be fast and run great but u could get a little more out of it and have less plug fouling.

Thanks for the advice guys..I would have just obeyed the sticker and ran 20:1. I feel good about 32:1 like most are suggesting..

I'm running YamaLube 2R at 32:1 for the time being, I will probably switch to synthetic in the future. I've only had mine 2 weeks

I use Golden Spectrum myself.
This Golden Spectrum you speak of... is this a close relative of the Golden Speculum? :D I've heard of Golden Spectro before.. hmmm

I've used Maxima Super M for over 20 years with no damage. But the smell of Klotz makes me tingly all over..

Amsoil here and mixed at 32:1, seems to be the norm for most to run.

But AMS oil is designed and made to be run at 50:1.

I think it's a good idea for everybody to now announce what kind of two stroke oil they run and how it smells.

You'll know when I'm trying to be funny tool, believe me. I realize you new guys are unfamiliar with the rules, but a simple search would turn up more than enough answers.

YAY! I like Klotz! Especially at 32~34:1... it almost smells better than a pretty woman's hair.
Actually, it does.
