I just bought an 83 200x. It smokes a little when you rev er up then let off the throttle. Is this normal or problematic? I used to have a 350x and it smoked like a freight train but I knew that wasn't right. Hoping to here that a little smoke in these machines is fine. Had a 250sx that I put a million miles on and never smoked a lick but I realize these are totally different machines. Any of your input is appreciated.
Thanks!

Better yet, just start stuffing smokes into the intake until it backfires and dies.

That's how my grandad's father got him to quit when he was 17.

Could be bad rings...

Could be valve seals, rings, etc. Most likely needs a top end rebuild. If it were me and it's only a little when you rev it I would just ride it. Maybe tear it down and rebuild if it gets worse or as a winter project

Cruise for a couple of minutes with steady throttle in one gear - then let go the throttle and let it engine brake down to a crawl, then open the throttle and keep it open going back up to cruising speed. Does it puff smoke out as soon as you open up and then gradually stop? If so then it is likely the valve guides and seals (sometimes only the seals which go hard after a few years).

If it keeps on smoking its probably the rings. Worn rings usually show smoke when you give it some throttle and hold it open at cruising speed. The smoke keeps coming. As the rings get worse it starts to smoke all the time even when idling. The other thing that happens with worn rings is the pressure in the crankcase gets high and it blows oil out of seals and breather system.

If your rings are badly worn you will show that on a compression test. If the compression is good then it will be the valves. A leak from the oil way to the head at the head gasket is another possibility.
