been on the hunt for awhile, a few got sold out from under me, but it was a good thing, because i am liking this score. its in great shape with 10000 miles. is missing nothing, and appears to not have been offroad much. Guy i bought it from got it in an estate sale when some old guy past. he had it put on the road to take his road test on. so it is 100% ready to go. I took the muffler off, because i think the baffle broke free and is just clanking around in there. a shame to cause its in great shape, but i am gonna have to cut it in half to get it out, then re-weld itback together. I will be laughing at the gas pumps this summer!! I gave 750.00 for it local!!

AWESOME bike. Quick question - I thought there were XL - Rs and XL - Ls. Am I right or wrong? Maybe they were all XL-Rs. Anyway - I love the looks! Ever notice how the old dirtbikes and trikes had the same graphics year to year. Very cool - and great find. Report back with a Mile / Gallon status. I'll guess - 75.

Very cool! The XLs are hard to find. I regularly see XRs for sale, but rarely an XL. And it has all the DOT parts still - even more rare! You probably even got a clean title, too, huh?

NICE!

Tim, they made XL-r's, and they also made XR-L's they where both road legal. other than that i do not know the difference. I think the XL's produced alittle more power, larger headpipe, better flow. dont quote me on that. I do have a clean title for it, and it was just inspected last week. I cut the muffler in half at the angled weld, took the piece of the baffle out, and welded her back up. alittle stove black, and she is good to go. Same color and decals as the 83-84 250r!! I am gonna take the tank off and flush it a bit. no rust , just some brown varnish, and build up, should clean up rather easy.

since i have been looking for the last few months, they are hard to find, but they are out there. Most of the ones i see in similar shape to this one go for 12-1800.00. especially when you get into the larger displacement 350's, 500's and 600's. I could not believe the price of a new crf 230L- starts at 5000.00!! Plus there is no vintage coolness, or nastalgia like i get from this 84!! No brainer for me!!

Hey Rory, I just picked up the same bike in a 1983 - needs lots of work - but it was free!! I need lights, turn signals, speedo - and motor rebuild. Don;t have any spare parts do you?

I picked up a '78 XL 250, gotta love that 4 valve head.

It's old, dirty, and smokes like a freight train, I've dubbed it "The Skank".
