guys my sx is giving me crap and I can use some advice.

When I hit the gas it chugs and dies...was working great all day yesterday at camp but today 5 min down the road it starts to chug.

air box is good with fresh filter

only thing I can think of is carb is dirty. should it be rebuilt or just shot with some carb cleaner first?

I cleaned the petcock last fall but I'll check that out also.

tried going with the gas cap off the bike but it still did it.

anything i missed or worth trying?

I also cleaned up the plug

one more thing.......it happen last fall one time also right after I tipped the machine over, didn't roll just tipped.

The tank is good but i wonder if junk inside shook up from the impact?

Whats that stuff used to coat the inside of the tank? I think I'll get the carb rebuilt and coat the tank.

Clean everything you can before buying rebuild kits and stuff. It can be really stupid and easy fixing but can also be more complex. Start with the obvious. You're on the right track with cleaning the carb, petcook, tank though.
I'm not sure what you mean with "chug".

thanks

the chug is when i push on thumb lever it starts to starve for air/gas it sounds like, the rpm slows and at full gas it dies. It will run at idle and can rev a little in N but when in gear it will idle but as soon as gas is hit it "chugs",lol hope that helps

Clean your carb. To be perfect and avoid it all again. Also clean your tank, and petcock. Put in a NEW spark plug. Drain and flush your engine and rear oils. Clean and oil your air filter, and enjoy for a LONG time.

Yea i would buy a full carb kit, use alot of carb cleaner to clean out all the holes and passes where the gas goes thru and put the new jets also the needle make sure u put the needle on the groove it needs, should be the second groove from the top.

And DONT buy a "moose" kit... They suck.

KBS Tank Coating Kit. It comes with a degreaser, an acid wash, and the liner. Very easy to do.

Check that your choke needle is seating properly. My 85 BR was working fine but died when I would give it gas. We cleaned the carb, tried it and it did the same thing, so we changed the carb and it still did the same thing. Finally we tried the original carb again but changed the choke to a 86 style jet and it cured the problem. It would rev up perfectly. Maybe just as simple as that.

Thanks a bunch guys.

I took the carb off today and she was dirty, lol! bunch of rust mud stuck in the bowl.

Looks like i'm gunna have to get new gaskets or a rebuild kit cause they are junk also.

havent taken the peatcock off yet but i'm sure it's dirty in there also.

I'm gunna clean her up and get a cheap in-line filter till I can afford the tank coat kit.

Thanks again :)

Throw some "seafoam" in the tank after you put it all together, it will clean everything that you might have missed. That stuff works miracles!!!
