ok so to start off sorry for posting this here, but this is in reguards to a 400ex. i figured try here since no one else can help me. im getting a friend into riding and he got 01 400ex. the problem the clutch doesnt disengage it has a hinson inner n outter basket and a full clutch kit(fibers, springs and discs) and still doesnt work. you can shift gears just have to do it as you lef off the throttle. i yet havent broken it down but does anyone know what it can possibly be? ill have pics and more info tmrw.
same problem on my Z. pulled the whole thing apart and the water seal was shot and all the plates where bonded together. cleaned the plates off with sandpaper and made sure everything was spick and span and assembled it again. waiting on the gasket maker to cure and we'll take it for a rip tomorrow and see how it works. i could be that your plates our also stuck together from sitting. hit everything with #600, make sure it is still within thickness specs. and put it back together again. although i am not familiar with the 400ex engine, the clutch still works on the same principle. on the tri z there is a rod with a ball bearing that goes from the clutch actuator and pushes on the hub. (I'm guessing the ex is similar to this) If the plates are fine, you might have to dig in deeper and check out the mechanism that moves the hub.

any one else have any ideas? i wanna fix this and ride this weekend.
pull it apart buddy. thats all i can say without looking at it. did you put the basket and plates in? if so, has it ever worked that you know of? its not too complicated to pull the cover and take a peek. have a shop manual around if you are not sure. those things are invaluable.
