Hello all. I haven't been on in a while so I figured id throw a question out here and see what I get. My 84 250r takes a while to start. After it sits, it takes prolly 10 kicks to start it. After it sits a long time (a couple weeks or so) it takes like 50 kicks. This is not so much of a problem as it is an annoyance. When it does start it pegs out WOT then calms back down to normal idle after a few seconds. I am just wondering what might cause this and where to start. It has a Mikuni carb on it. It had head bolt issues when I first bought it. Its fixed and the cometic head gasket doesn't leak. Im interested in hearing from y'all. Thanks so much!

maybe a small air leak? when you have it running next take some carb cleaner and spare around the the bottem of the cylinder and around the reeds/intake boot. If it was a very small leak it can pull abite of air in then when it cold but as soon as it warms up it would go away? just my .o2

Sounds like its lean, check and clean the carb and check the pilot screw and adjust accordingly if needed.. Also hillbilly has a good idea so i'd try that as well

I was thinking lean myself. It is also a good idea for the air leak check!

You may be better off to try and do a leak down test. If it is that small of an air leak it may go away fast as the bike get warms. The leak down test lets you test it when the bike is cold

Sorry guys! It's been an f'd up week! I've barely had time to shower! I digress. Anyways I appreciate the info. Im sure I could conjure up that leak down detector. Seems simple enough. I am going to attach some pics of my carb and could you all tell me which screw is which on my Mikuni carb? I am also going to post it in a new forum in case if this one is dead already.

So which one will "cure" the lean issue?

That most likley won't fix your problem just be playing with the air screw. There are other problem at hand that are not letting your bike start right away. From what you have told use I would think that there is a small air leak that cause your bike to rev up when it does start to run and onces the engine warm up the small leak gets seal beacuse the cases expands and close the leak. just my .02
