I just got a 1984 200x project bike up and running. It blows blue smoke even while idling and after a short ride there is a puddle of oil in the end of the exhaust and oil splatter on my rear grab bar. The smoking to me sounds like it needs a new piston and rings but I've also read that maybe a bad valve seal could cause excessive oil? Or is there something else that needs attention? Thanks for all the help.

Might as well change out the valve seals at a minimum while you have it apart. They will come with a top end gasket kit if you go that route. You could also look into getting new valves. It really depends on how far you want to take it

if your piston is ok, rings/hone and a top end gasket kit (comes with valve seals), lap the valves and a timing chain is a good idea too, cheap. Total $60

sounds like rings for sure...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm gonna try to get by with just rings for now. I don't know what kind of future this 200x has with me so I don't wanna drop too much money into just yet.
