View Full Version : My Budget Build. Saving a 250R and Calfab

I have been wanting to semi retire my current R and put some vintage love into it for awhile now since it is clean and low hour. I have some OEM fenders and a ST kit I want to put on it.

So I want to build a R for the track and trail out of leftover parts that Mosh and I have.
So today I dug into it and decided to get a roller going.
I have a 89 crankk at Sprocks for a rebuild, Jason Hall has a 86 jug of mine that he ported and Mosh has about 3 engines that we are going to use to build one for my new project.
Today, I cleaned and painted a bunch of parts mounted up my shock and swingarm and grabbed a bunch of leftovers for the build. I want to keep this on a tight budget, not real pretty, so I can just ride the wheels off of it.
I still need some radiators and airbox set-up and some brakes. Hopefully I can find some good deals on those.

Here is what we have done to this point. This will take a awhile to complete, but with any luck I am hoping to fire it up in October.:D

Thanks guys. Thanks fallout for the link.

The seat? LOL...I think I am just going to run my red one, and put my stock one back on my other R.
I have color plans for it later. But for now, just get it up and running.

Ya, that is a nice line up isn't it? They are all Mosh's except the Banshee is mine. The 86 TRX is very nice. He has people offer him money or trades for it all the time. It isn't going anywhere.

I'll keep this thread updated as it comes along. I want to hit the junk yard this morning and see what all I can find.

WOW..I want to give a big thanks to all of you that have offered to help in some way, via posts and PM's..With parts and such. You guys are really awesome!!!

I have a free day off today and plan on getting the roller up and going. Hopefully I can get some pics..Last nite I finished up the bottom end. We are building this chassis, as nice as we can for a retro racer OEM look, which will get Tammy's current, mint, Stock 250R engine. Her machine will get a ported Jason Hall top end witha 38 mil carb and PT pipe, and pretty much remain the same in appearence.

Between the raffle trike and a custom 70 last winter, This will be the 5th machine I have built/building in the last year. I am currently helping my brother build a R for him, and I have a buddy dropping off a 70 chassis for a custom build as well..Needless to say I am a little tired, stressed and overwhelmed, but idle hands and mind equal boredom....

I was wondering!!!

I want to publically thank Kasey, and also offer an appology at this time in conjunction with our private convbersations.

Kasey sent us a bunch of parts, for a good deal, including the titled frame that you see, and between the forum crash last week, and my stress of trying to build all this stuff and round up parts, we lost some communications thru PM's and I got a little impatient with Kasey about a part mix-up added to the lost PM's.
Kasey was good to deal with and understanding with me. So thanks again Kasey!

Thanks Curt.

Well not much progress, well some..Got a roller going. I am just playing with some ideas on set-ups, and waiting for some more parts deals to develop. Hopefully in January we will have a nice addition to the build.
I purchased a rear caliper from a rust free state, hoping for the best. The last one I got form that region was mint, and needed no work, but unfortunately I could tell right away by the stripped brake pad pin there was going to be trouble, due to corrosion. It also had a siezed caliper piston. So I twisted it on a grease gun at the banjo bolt, got the pistons to push out. Next, I had to drill into the brake pin, careful not to damage the housing, until I was able to disengage the threads from the seized pin. Once that was done then I used a twist out socket to remove the threaded portion. Then I sourced some new caliper parts from my NOS R stash,(which is about down to nothing now.) including a NOS brake piston, and began the rebuild process. Probably have at least 4 hours into saving this caliper. I should have just went with a newer YZ set-up.
Also sourced a new rear rotor.

Just a pic of the roller and the brake caliper pin carnage, not finalized on items yet that we want to run.

We recieved the CalFAB for this project and it was a very solid piece but needed some repairs for cosmetics from years of use.

You know, I got to hand it to Flyin Brian. He has been busy as heck and I managed to stop by and he made time to fix the swinger for Tammy's build. Not only that, but he ALWAYS finds ways to make something better than it was.

For instance. He made the point that how could CalFab make such beautiful works of art, and then fall short on the slider configuration. As some may know, they used 2 flat stock plastic rails and drilled wood screws into the arm for chain protection which was adequate at best. You can see the damage on this swinger before repairs. Well Brian came up with a simple solution. Weld up the screw holes and set it up for a stock chain slider. In which case I opted for the almighty beefy TM Designworks system. So all is fitted, repaired with new bearings and seals. a litlle more clean-up, drill and tap the slider bung hole and get the repop stickers from Blue and she's goin on..Good news, the ported top end hopefully is just about done this week as well.

Pics in order of swinger progress from getting it to wher it is now, and I still need to do some final cleaning on it when it's ready.

Beautiful!

Do those TM Designworks sliders work with the nylon swingarm bushings available here on the 3ww shop? Just wondering because I got a conventional slider and I had to clearance the slider where it wraps around the front due to the bushings vs needle bearings.

Crap this build is taking forever. Reading back through, building 5 other trikes has really put this one on the back burner, but here is some teasers and progress, and I have more to add soon if you all still are interested.

Ok, it is up and running. I have about 1 hour left of work to do and some major clean-up and detail work. The Calfab has a problem with the caliper mount bracket. Calfab placed the pin for the brake bracket too low and it causes the caliper to hit the swing arm gusset and the block off plate will not go on, nor can you adjust the chain. This gusset was ground away by another owner to "remedy" the problem. (You can see this in the dirty swing arm pics above) before Flyin Brian made the repairs. So what I will be doing is making a custom brake caliper plate to position the caliper back to the correct OEM position. Then All I have left is to run the rear brake hose and bleed it. I also have a like NOS front tire on a silver rim that I will be putting on when time permits. And Lastly, waiting on my Answer silencer, stickers and shroud stickers from Bruce, AKA Blue27. He was the one that did the Calfab stickers and I couldn't be happier with his work. For now, Retro Racer is just about done. I built this trike to mimic what a "period correct era" race trike might have had. No more no less.

Thanks guys. It never was a hurry up build. We kinda just nibbled at it as time permitted. But man 3 years? It has been sitting in this shape for about 7 months, and I finally ordered a new pet cock to get it fired. We all build these things or clean em up, save em, etc, and the comments are always worth the hard word work in the end.

Okay if some of you have been following this thread you will remember the cal fab was in bad shape. Mostly due to the fact that over the years some owners ground the gussets down because of cal fabs improper pin location for the caliper stay bracket. This made chain adjustment almost nil and basically as the caliper wore the pads the top pin would dig into the swinger. If you look at the before pics on page 2 you can see this.
So what I did was cut up a oem brake plate and relocated the pin portionof the plate. Works like a charm with full adjustment. There was still a problem with the brake block off clearing the gusset so I took care of that as well.

This trike is for sale now. However we are not really pushing that issue.

Noticed your plastic in pictures. While building it up not so shiny. Then when pretty much done you plastic was nice and shiny. What product do you use to make your plastic shine. I have done some research and some are using floor polish. Wondering what you are using, you obviously do great work and I would like to make sure that my bike comes out as nice as yours.
Thanks.

Thanks.Sorry bud for the late response..Just went through some stuff and did not even see you posted.

The pics in the shop were of dusty fenders and poor lighting combined with a cold cellphone with a "foggy" pic.
But to answer your question, I use Maxima SC-1 on all my fenders, and lightly polish it in after application with a soft rag..

I did have this listed for sale and decide to keep it due to a future deal with a long time Friend..Long story I care not to get into but in the end, is a great deal for him and I both...

But man oh man...
I got inundated with emails from quite a few CL trolls....

The timely/impending deal with a long time friend, and combination of internet trolls and twits, probably ruined a good deal for somebody...
