heres the deal the trike ran great until a couple weeks ago when some water made its way into the stator cover. I had it running ok since then but hasnt been right and now is even worse. it will run fine in higher rpms but will not idle anymore and just cuts out like its losing spark at idle or just above. it always started first or second kick before with choke and no throttle after the water got in I would have to hold it wide open to get it to start and now wont kick start at all cold I have to bump start it. what I have done so far is completely clean carb and set to factory specs, new plug, tested stator resistance(within range) I plan later today to swap out stator with a known good one, clean grounding points on the frame, change coil and cdi if needed. not necessarily in that order. anyone had this problem? am I missing something? possibly not electrical like powervalve sticking open? also the fuel is fresh and clean. I figured I would get some thoughts before wasting time going in the wrong direction

I very much doubt it has any thing to do with the powervalves since it ran fine till you got water in the stator??? How did water get in the stator anyway? I would stick with tracking down the electrical system and maybe try another new plug at the proper gap. Hows your air filter, I didnt read that you cleaned it yet. Good luck!

just checked the powervalves and are moving free. plug is new, air filter was new with yahalube synthetic filter oil when i rebuilt the engine 10hrs or less ago. we went riding a couple weeks ago in pretty wet conditions and thats when it started acting up to begin with. oh well I guess I will have to go get some cold ones and go hang out in the garage a few hours to track this gremlin down

Yeah, it could be something as simple as the coil not being properly grounded (they are grounded by the bolts that hold them on) or even the plug lead being loose/corroded. Good idea on getting some cold ones :beer

yesterday i cleaned the coil mounts and the terminals from the cdi. no change. got a new needle valve for the carb today since it was leaking from the over flow after adjusting carb per service manual. most likely not the issue but will put in and keep going on the electrical

turned out to be the charging coil. The carb still leaked after the new needle and seat so I put in a brass one piece float deal I had and set to mikuni spec. all is good now
