you need a crayon etching or photo of the vin along with a statement from the police after they run the vin saying it is never been reported stolen and of coarse the proper paperwork. talk to cattledog I know he was able to get a statement from the dealer that was enough to make the dmv happy. he would know more on that

long story short, the dmv asked me to have the dealer verifie the vin i etched so took the 350x to my honda dealer, he punched it in his computer, it came back with who purchased it new and that it wasnt stolen, the dealer printed the sheet i took that and the paperwork you have one which i stated i have owned it for over a year,
they gave me my plate and non tranferable reg, then 8 weeks later the tranferable registation came in the mail.

Hmm, must be there are some different ways to do it depending on the mood of the DMV worker you are dealing with at the time.

I have done it this way:

#1: Digital photo of vin# You may still want to take the machine to a police station and have them run the vin and issue you a police statement saying the vin is clean (not been reported stolen)
#2: filled out DMV form, affidavit of ownership (MV51B). In the MV51B form it states that you must have name and
address of previous owner. I have registered a snowmobile this way without previous owner info.
#3: Application for new registration. (MV82)

These documents are available online and can be printed from the website so you can fill them out and take everything to the DMV complete and ready to go. Heres a link to the DMV site.. http://www.nysdmv.com/index.htm

Just click on the "forms" icon near the top of the homepage and scroll down till you find the forms you need and then print.

And yes Dougspcs, NY can be awful. But at least they allow trikes to ride anywhere 4-wheeled atvs are allowed so long as you are registered and insured. NY makes no distinction between 3 and 4 wheeled atvs.... (which I must admit surprises me a little bit!)

Dear140: I have NYS minimum liability on my '86 230 Q'sport, '88 230 Q'runner, '85 ATC250r and '03 LTZ400. I pay $82 a year to insure all 4. The insurance is provided by Progressive and I buy it through my local agent. Just thought I would let you know since you are paying more for your single machine than I am for all 4 of mine...

thanks a lot. its weird bc i had my insurance quote by progressive. the DMV people i go to are on a military base, they dont get much action compared to in a city and are extremely friendly and willing to work with me. they said digital photo is fine although a signed police statement will make it go much smoother. i have no previoius owner information which worries me. i picked it up on the side of the road for 25 dollars pretty much said hi then left. and now he moved, so i have no clue about name or address. hopefully all will go smoothly.

AH, Fort Drum I presume. Im pretty well acquainted with the area. I live in CNY area, but my in-laws live up near Clayton.

Well, if you have owned it for 3 years or more, you should be able to get it registered with that affidavit of ownership i listed. I registered a sled that way. We got no paperwork with it and just rode it around our property and since we owned it more than 3 years all went well with the digital pic of the vin.

If all else fails, contact the DMV and tell them your exact situation. They have an information line listed in the phone book for the purpose of helping people have everything correct before wasting a trip to the DMV. They should be able to guide you right through it. In fact, thats how we found out how to register that sled the way we did. So long as the machine was never reported stolen you shouldnt have any issues.

my 86 350x was easy once i had the dealer paper work as i staed now i am going to do my 85 350x the same way, i have progressive full replacement value comp and liability and they valued the 86 at $2,500 replacement value, no deductable it cost me $178 a year, they will repair it if i crash, replace it if i total it for $2500 so i will pay for full coverage.
i have lived in ny my whole life and the dmv here can be diffrent everytime you go in.

The affidavit of ownership is the proof as you are swearing under penalty of purjory that the information provided on the form is true to the best of your knowledge. Being that you have owned it 2 years, if you KNOW it wasnt registered 3 years ago in someone elses name you can pull it off. Conversely, if you state on the form you have owned it 3 years and they find it was registered 3 years ago in someon elses name then you will be in trouble for falsifying a document.

CATTLEDOG: you are absolutely right about the possibility of things being different every time you walk in to the DMV. I have gone to one DMV to do a transaction and was turned away for reason I felt were bogus. Went to a different DMV and got it done. In some cases the DMV clerk just doesnt know the truth. My mother once had a DMV clerk give her a hard time about using forms printed from the DMV site, completing them at home and taking them in to complete the transaction. The clerk quite nastily tried to tell her she HAD to use the forms from the shelf at the DMV and that she couldnt use the online printed forms. Which is total hogwash.

FWIW, I just do liability on mine. I figure if I crash with someone else and its their fault their insurance will pick it up. If its my fault I will just fix it myself. Parts are quite readily available for the most part for my machines. I figure, if I put in a claim on the full replacement, thewill surely jack my rates. I dont like spending alot of money on that sort of thing.... But, thats just my humble opinion, not trying to say anything bad if you choose to put full coverage on yours.....
