1985 ATC 500R Build Thread

A Billy Golightly 500r frame came up for sale and I POUNCED on it. :lol: In the classified thread there was numerous requests for a build thread, so here goes. These are the only pics I have of it so far. Once I get the frame better pics and progress to come......:pics:

This is gonna be gnarly.. So ready for this. This is definitely one of the builds I have been wanting to do for a long time. Kawasaki or Honda.. I can't imagine what this will look like with the Mr. Clean treatment.. Excited!!

Got the frame last week and just got it up on three wheels. Re-threaded most of the bolt holes, have a couple left to do. Also need to tweak the subframe as its bent a bit......Need to get my motor and electronics to start mock up on the pipe, carb and kicker issues.

I just put on the stocker to get it to roll around and test fit shock mount etc.....fully knowing and trusting Billys attention to detail but you just never know. I want to make it look OEM but is going to be a duner with +6 swinger. I would love inverts etc but I have so many OEM parts that to keep cost down and get it running I will use alot of the OEM parts. Then plastics is the last problem, gonna have to suck it and go OEM red and have my vinyl/designer make some very cool vinyl.

Damm! Now you are makin me reconsider selling my frame.
May have to just go ahead and get in the "Big Boys" club.
I'm thinkin Black plastics with Neon Yellow Chassis components. Possibly a slightly stretched 450R rear end.
We'll see, I got some hard thinking to do.

What do you mean by that? Quite a few members on here have built ATC500R's There's been a few KXT500's as well, forget whose, but there is a sick 86-87 KXT500 I've seen done on here.

Ill be starting a KXT500 build in 2 weeks when I get the frame off of ben6626. Ive been checking out some kx500 motors and odds and ends but got a low budget to work off of so will take some time. This 500R will be done before mine and Mr. Clean is makin great progress already. Good job and keep the pics coming!

I thought ALL 500r builds start with a polished tank?

Finished tapping what bolt holes will be used, and mounted up some parts so I can get an idea for routing of hoses, wires, etc......

Mentioned to a co worker about needing a running cr500 motor he mentions an 88 that he knows of. At the same time an 87 pops up on C-List.

Bought the 88 and got it running after fresh gas and about 10 kicks. I felt bad for about 10 minutes about tearing down such a clean unabused 500, then I realized how much work I still have in front of me and got over it.. :lol:

It does look nice, but then again, you have to be one hell of a rider to bat on a CR500. Much easier to crash one......

Dune season and buying a quad for my wife got in the way of any real progress.....good news is I sold a 250r last night so that should kick start some progress. I have rounded up some OEM plastics!! I have another 500 deal in the works as well...updates to come.....

The other thing that got in my way was a stuck swingarm bolt on my primary 85R and it turned into this.

So I cut off the old CDI and coil mount from the 250r frame. Then cut the coil mounts from an old CR500 frame and re-configured them on the 250r frame. Worked out okay and will never be visible with gas tank installed.
