Okay, so I've got this '85 Honda '70 see. I didn't pay much for it but I think it was rode hard and put away wet (if you know what I mean.) Anyway, its ailment is it does not ALWAYS shift into the next gear. It can fail on either a up-shift or a downshift and not always the same gear. A lot of times it refuses to come back to neutral. There appears to be no clutch slippage when it IS in gear. I have no problem with tearing something down to the anchor bolts but I would like a bit of advice from you guys that have been there as
just what I should be looking for. (before the surgery starts). I have manuals and parts breakdowns so if you need to be specific, I'll try to translate. Thank you so much for any help..........zeeker

I have noticed that a lot of the 85 atc70's have shift issues. I kinda remember hearing that since it was the first year for the up shift there was an issue or two.

Hey oldtime, I see you've got a pair of these. Do you concur with shortlines assessment of the problem? I figure he's seen the innards a whole lot of times.

That would be the first thing I check. He seems to know a heck of a lot about trike motors.

Damn, you guys are smart. I finally got around to throwing it on the bench and taking the side cover off. Saw nothing! Big gear in the way. Book says to remove clutch. O.K Book says to put penny in gears. O.K. That didn't do squat. Everything turns! What to do? Drink another beer. Finally brain became engaged and remembered old trick from V8 chevy days to keep valves from falling down. Cotton rope in plug hole. Worked great. (Of course after I did all this, I read a post that said just hold it with your hand and use an impact.) DUH! I also learned that if you don't have an impact screwdriver, forget about getting the screws out of the clutch cover. TIGHT! Anyway, after getting down to the nitty gritty, well, Ray Charles could see the problem. It's BROKE! BUT, the broken piece was NOT in there. I've just got a hunch that somebody was there before me. When I bought this beauty, the guy gave me a drywall bucket of old clutch parts. It had probably fallen out when he had the cover off. Or not! Soooo do you have any tips on holding up the clutch cam plate and spring in place while putting the cover back on? It would be easy if the motor was out and laying on its side, but it's NOT. Zeeker thanks you for any helpful hints. Parts supposed to be here tomorrow.

A little cam assembly lube can do wonders for holding parts in place. And left over from the v8 days?

I use a little axle grease to hold it all in place but it also goes together with less frustration if you lean the bike on its side . That piece missing might be in the center case so if you have a magnetic pencil probe around and see if you can find it .
