When my tri-z runs out of gas it screams. I get it the motor leans out, but why is it that the damn thing wont shut off unless I dump the clutch. I've ridden 4-stroke my whole life and never seen it happen on my buddies bike (even if im the one riding it). Is it a tri-z thing. The guy I bought my first Z from told me he thought he had an electrical issue when it happened to him, so he let the bike sit for 10 years in the garage ie I got a $250 clean Z that I flushed and ran. When I finished the top end on my other $300 Z it did exactly what the guy was saying about the first bike to me after an afternoon of repeated wheelies up and down my street, (also making new friends that weren't too happy about the noise). Any ideas? Other than DON'T RUN OUT OF GAS! Thanks for the help, love this forum.

When I got my quadzilla it did the same thing. I put a new carb on it and it has never done it again. I'm sure I could have went through the carb and cleaned it or looked further to c exactly y it was doing it. Some scary sh*t though.

Yeah really scarry when the front wheel is up. I rebuilt the carb tho. Should have bought a 38 for what the oem main, pilot, needle and seat cost. Oh well at least its fresh. Speaking of which, does anyone have a flat slide 38?

If I"m explaining this right, the proper amount of fuel and the oil mixture actually help to cool the cylinder. When the fuel runs out or starts leaning out as the fuel flow tapers off, it overheats the cylinder. At that point that engine runs off of it's own heat, and most people usually call this "dieseling". But what I want to know is, how hard is it to check your fuel tank every so often to help prevent this? I think it would save you money in the long run just from ruined parts. Another term for this is called the "Death Rev". It can be very expensive.

Mine quadzilla had full fuel. The carb created the lean situation somehow. But yes it was dieseling. No plug wire, no key, kill switch on off.

i have to agree with vealmonkey running your 2 stroke out of gas multiple times is doing nothing but damage to your engine, if you have done this to a fresh engine it is no longer fresh

its a 2 stroke thing, my chainsaw does that when it runs out of gas, and my friends dirt bike does. just check the tank, if your one of those people who dont like to fill the tank all the way (like me) use a dip stick to check it, a paint stirrer works fine, and its bad on an engine to run it out of gas, my kingquad wouldnt even start after i ran it out, i had to pour gas in the carb and rev it up to get it to run. btw from what ive heard if you do that to a diesel engine it wont work right again, dont know myself

Its happened to me and my R too. It leaned out and had to drop the clutch to kill it. It blew my stator. What sucks is like to turn the fuel off on the carb to drain it so I dont have fuel thats clogging the carb if it sits, looks like I will have to change that. I have also heard the term Maverick Spark where the motor is running off itself.

Diesel guys have this problem on pulling trucks and tractors. As mentioned before as long as there is fuel, air and enough heat to ignite, you may have trouble shutting them down. I've seen many truck run air shutoffs on the intake to prevent a runaway. Easiest way to explain it would be a big cigar cutter that shuts down the air intake tube. I believe some are even spring loaded so all you have to do is pull a cable, it pops a pin and slams it shut. oh BTW, don't run out of gas.

Thanks for the info. That's what I figured had happened. It just did it the one time and the petcock was on so I just went to reserve. This was also the first tank of gas I ran through the bike so I wasn't expecting it to happen. As for the carb parts with the bowl gasket the tab was $93 from the dealer. Needle and seat was $44 alone. Glad I got the oem parts but a new carb would've been nice and worth the extra coin.

I didn't look online tho. I was already at the dealer, plus its a local shop so I don't really mind putting the money back into the community.
When you shut of the engine and it still "death revs", hold the throttle wide open with the ignition off. It will kill it every time. I know it goes against all logical thinking, but it works.

That does make sense. With the slide shut it runs lean but open the slide and it would become to lean to keep running. If im ever dumb enough to let it run out of gas again i'll try it.
