I have 1984 honda 200m. What does the battery need to be connected to for just the recoil/pull start to work? The electric start is garbage b/c the previous owner tried rewiring it and screwed it up.

I have a 84 200M that runs fine without a battery, so if yours does not, other parts of the wiring must have a problem. Wire brush all of the electrical connectors starting with the primary coil; that will usually get it running.

well thats the thing....none of the wiring is hooked up right now. I pulled the motor to replace gaskets and took all the wiring out with it. If you're able to tell me what wires go where to/from the coil and what not that would be great.

Making a wiring harness is a lot of work. I am a cheapskate and I still buy a used harness off ebay before I would make one.

No lights do not have to work. I just it to start so I can enjoy it. Ill figure out lights and all that later on. And ive tried reading the wiring diagram but since the previous owner screwed everything up it is not the same.

I have used a 185 harness as a troubleshooting step to start my electric start 200's. That is the simplest wiring that it will run on. The problem is that the electric start stators output over 12v and depend on the voltage regulator to keep it at 12v. I have heard that you can fry the CDI if it is run unregulated.
When I was running my 200M on a 185 harness, the headlight would get really bright when I revved the engine. I stared at it like a chicken staring at a shiny marble, until the headlight bulb went pop.
