So my brother is in the process of rebuilding an 85 250r...he has an 85 rear swinger, so my question is whether or not I can use the bearing carrier off an 86, and if so, will I also have to get an axle and brake stay from an 86? I have an 86 350x, and know that 86 and 85 bearing carriers would require this complete swap.

The carriers will interchange in both 350x and 250r, but if you put an 86 carrier in a 85 350x you'll need to use 86 type sprocket bolts. The 250r swap is a bolt in.

The '86 250r carrier will not fit in a '85 250r swinger.

BKM..why not? What about the rear axle, are they interchangable?

The '85 carrier is smaller then the '86 carrier. If you've swapped them you've perfomed some sort of feat that no other triker has been able to do before you.

Just so we can lay this nonsence to rest. Read this post. You can debate me all you want but I dare you to challenge Kasey.

in most cases the preson swapping parts really has no idea what parts they have to start with ... because all swingarms from 85, 86 . 87 will bolt on to all atc's and trx's so you have an 85 frame that does not mean that someone in the past didn't swap different parts on to it,,,,,, i guess the best thing would be to get informed about what you have BEFORE YOU come in and make yourself look foolish!!!! (in my best forest gump voice) HAVE A NICE DAY!!!
