Hey
I just bought a 96 polaris XCR 600 for $400 off a friend. The body is in excellent condition and the track is only missing 2 studs so im pretty happy about that. Now the not so good is the rod bearing on the stator side let go and the shavings chewed up the cylinder and mangled the head.

My question is what should I do, get a crank, cylinder and head off ebay then get a gasket kit and topend kit and put it back together or should I have my old crank rebuilt, get my cylinder bored and just replace the head.

Im just worried about getting a used crank on ebay because I could be putting in a crank on its last legs and have payed 2/3 the price of a rebuilt one. Also when you are working with an engine with more then one cylinder do you just bore the damaged cylinder or bore all 3 to keep them all the same? Always wondered about that but have never worked on a tripple.

any help is appreciated

Depends on how long u plan on having the sled. If u plan on riding it allot and have it a while. do it right. rebuild the crank bore the cylinders and replace the head. If u plan on riding it a little bit then sell it u could try the cheap way. Polairs triples have always had weak cranks in them. known for em going out. And when boring u have to bore all 3 cylinders. Hope this helps.

Honestly I would sell it and get money back. The cost of the total rebuild will put you way over what the sled is worth. If the machine has had any modifactions done to it like pipes will make things worse. They are not the easiest things to tune.

I know the stock 96 tracks and I think the 97 on them were not very good alot of studs pull pull out and eventually the track will break. I had it happen going 101.5mph at a radar run on a old RXL I had.

I had the same sled with the same problem. Ended up selling it for parts...was going to cose upwards around 700+ dollars to do it right...Those XLT motors have weak crank bearings...were never wide enough...so if you get up completly rebuilt right, get the updated crank bearings, and do the whole motor. Best bet is to ship the motor out to get this done. Won't be cheap. IMHO I wouldn't waste my time with that sled. It's old, you could dump 1000$ into that motor and the sled MIGHT be worth that. Sell it, and update yourself with a newer tripple with a Ultra SPX 680, or just get a twin.

I never scrolled down here! Sled heads !! I have been riding sleds 33 years,,been a dealer 23. I completely agree with the guys above. That sled is NOT worth putting that money in. Yes,,if you want things"perfect" bore all 3. Not neccessary! If you can go .10 over on the damaged one,,it will be slightly out of balance,,and not las another 6000 miles. But given your situation. IF,you found a cheap crank, you still need to piston and ring all the cylinders. And the bores will be out anyhow,,which is why the piston broke in the 1st place. Move onto something better! My .02
