Well I found an 85 200x on CL about 15 miles away from me, and I have CASH!!! Left message on machine but what I could tell from pics, it looks good. Only problem stated is it won't start, so what is it most likely? I've been thinkin carb, plug, or possibly stator. What I need from you guys is info on the CDI box on top of the cylinder, or regular ailments with these machines as I've never owned one. What is behind that CDI box? A points style setup?
And yes I don't even own yet but was thinking about mods.
How does this sound for a good woods machine- Better cam, better airfilter, definately an aftermarket exhaust (Cobras need not apply), and lastly how do you guys like the the 10.25to1 high comp piston?
Hit me back with anything as I don't know 83-85 200x's, and I got a mad new trike buzz going! here is link

Try to get the 350X parked behind it. :) Behind the cover is just the pickup and advance mechanism for the CDI, sometimes people mess with them and put them in 180 out. something to check. HH

Does it have enough compression to start? Pull the plug wire and kick it over and check for spark. If it sparks it's prolly in the fuel system. No spark, could be the little black box, aka the cdi. Or under the engine cover marked 'CDI' id the pulse generator, Pull the cover quick, 2 phillips head, could be ditry corroded cause of a bad gasket, Or even a simple groound, or the kill switch

Yeah I know how to diagnose quite well, was just wonderin if there were specific problems with this model, I.E. the checking of the CDI.I would love to hear some hop up tips as well, it's been awhile but I'm pretty sure a stock xr200 cam is a little hotter than the 200x's. I am not sure if anyone still offers a performance 83-85 cam. I really wanna know about the high-comp pistons too.
Oh trust me Harry, he's gonna get a couple once overs about the 350 Hoosier Daddy
But I figured hell for $500 (I'm sure I can at least get it down to $400) I should only have to put a couple hundred $ in parts and have a solid runner.

that`s what I told myself three times now and EVERY time I was WRONG......3 two-hundies and I have at least $500 in new stuff in EACH and one ended up at nearly $800 more to fix every little thing wrong with it......I would advise going over it with a fine tooth comb and take a calculator.....$500 is a little high for a non-runner...leave $$ room for parts...all mine`s brakes were F#$KED....the bearings....all the bearings and seals were F#%KED.....all needed topends.....when a guy says "it ran when parked" or "ran but smokes a little" means it doesn`t run good or even at all.....I try to lean toward the glass half empty side of things when it comes to a 200X....YOU WILL SPEND ALOT OF MONEY TO CONTINUE TO GO SLOW.....good woods machines for sure but I wanted real performance so I found an 85 Tecate to rebuild when I finish my 200X flattracker and I won`t ever do another performance build on a 4 stroker ever again....I would have one helluve badass 250 smoker for what i got in these 4pokes with a mere 19hp after $500 in mods.....just my opinion

Nah I dont wanna do a full resto mod on a 200x or 350x, I'm like you. I'll save my full teardown and high end performance mods for a 250 (or 500)
You know I was spying an 85 tec not running for $500 on CL, but I'm an R guy and this 200 is just minutes away. Maybe an 85 or 86-87 tec some day (Already did the Tri-Z thing). I in no way have the bank to even consider a Tiger.

Did you pick it up? Grab the 350 behind it!

if you can get him down it will definetly help. from my experience these end up being money pits. still alot of mods can be done to them. check the kicker gears, if they slip you'll be tearing into the bottom end. not to difficult but you'll be doing all the gaskets and seals and might as well do the steels and fibers in the clutch. not running could be alot of different things, look in the gas tank for rust, pull the plug and check the compression by hand. everyone has tons of electrical parts for these so that wont be a big problem for you. leevarnado here on the boards has a couple nice used pipes for sale. cams are available from a few places but they are pricey, used are tough to find. bikerchickltd on ebay used to sell a nice .340 lift cam that would be better than the xr. remember to check bearings and brakes as that stuff adds $$ up quick.good luck!

Yea thanks Zilla, you still got that 84 you were dumping money into the last time I saw ya? I tell ya what else Eric, I wanna take that 110 of yours for another rip! I gotta be more careful next time though, too much body english will tear ya a new ass with them studs, lol
Didnt get a call back yet, gonna call again shortly
What should I offer? $350?
And I am still wondering about those high compression piston kits, are they worth it?
P.S. got an offer on a complete Basanni exhaust, they good?

i unloaded my 200x long ago............ the bassani is a real nice pipe, i would grab it if not to pricey... the 10.25-1 piston kits are nice and will run good on pump fuel but you'll need a good set of kicker gears in there........ that trike looks like iot would clean up good, its probably worth 350.00...... keep us posted!

I personally think the 84 in Avondale looks pretty decent, I just wish there was a phone #.

The 200x was sold just hours prior of me going to snag it, i got my eye on a couple more, further away, but some Douche stole my truck, and I really don't know of anyone else with a truck.

Anyone near Avondale? http://delaware.craigslist.org/rvs/2506027596.html

And I dont know about this, 200x chassis with a 185s motor, I dont know if i could deal with an auto-X, even if it did run good, but for that price I'm sure I could snag a 200x motor too. Anyone near Apollo?http://syracuse.craigslist.org/rvs/2525222065.html

Which should I go for? The complete X, or the auto-X,?

every 200x ive put a 10.25 kit in had the kicker gears shot in a week its hard enough to keep the kicker gears alive with stock piston and my 200x's with the 10.25 kits didnt gain that much power. also those guys above are very correct how fast a $500 200x turns into a $1,500+ trike just fixing things ive done it a few times over dont regret it i was just saving a trike lol! thats my 2 cents spend it how you wish

Well I dont mind spending a little now then putting more money into it over the years, an 83-85 200x is something I plan on keeping for the rest of mt trike career. Plus the way I see it, when things go wrong it's a good excuse to upgrade and make it what I want it.
So with the 10.25 kits you are constantly screwing up the kicker assembly? I suppose there is no retio-fit kickstart assembly that beasts things up? No aftermarket either?
I basically was ooking into the 10.25 kit cause I thought it would really wake the 200 up making more throaty, thump better, and able to raise the front end alot easier.

Hey i looked at that one in avondale and left it sit. It jumped time, the rest of the bike was in pretty good shape though. I got him talked down to 350 but was thinking about all the things that could be wrong with it.

Hey, Thanks Jeep, now I owe you one.
Thats the way things work om 3ww.
Well, looks like I may try to snag the auto-x for now, get it back together with some of Xsytems nylon bushings and go over the chassis till I get an X motor. Will X components bolt to the 185S? Piston, Head/cam, headpipe, intake manifold and carb? I think virtually the only difference is the bottom end, and maybe a lower compressipn piston, and diferent head/valves/cam?http://syracuse.craigslist.org/rvs/2525222065.html
Or should I just wait for a complete X? It seems people even wanna charge $1000-$1500 for an 83-85, why would I do that if I could afford a 350X another 250R or evev a 400EX For that

Hey man no problem, i just had a bad feeling about that trike, i even had it loaded up and decided against it, then i found the deal i got and am glad that i did leave it!

the trike in my avatar is my custom pauter tube framed 110 i just used a solo seat instead of fenders and went kinda drag trike chopper style with it, on the kicker gears theres guys on here that have done some kind of back cutting to the gears to make them grab more and upgraded the spring there is a good thread with pics on here about it somewhere

Was just wondering swifty, it reminded me of Trizilla's 110 that I rode, and that thing was IMPRESSIVE. Wouuldnt mind doing one myself.
Very nice though Swift.
