I started this build in January and hoped to have it look like a 85 350x just finished up this last week . This was a piece by piece build since my plan was to use alot of aftermarket parts so i didnt start with a complete quad or dirtbike.
The rear swingarm is a JD Perforance +2
Motowoz Rear Shock
Lonestar rear link, adjustable axle ,carrier, fade nut
Outlaw rotors
Pro amor grab bar ,brake pedal, shifter
Zeta racing anodized engine plugs, brake clevis
Sunline clutch lever
asv front brake lever
Outlaw throttle and front master cover
Tag Alius fat bars /pro taper bar mounts
HRC head pipe with Hmf Competition silencer
CV4 Radiator hoses
Front forks were reworked by GO-RACE
Rear wheeels were ITP 9X9 that i sent to Champion wheels and had beadlocks installed
did seat myself along with powder coating the frame and swingarm

The TPC's are great, but that is by far my favorite one to date. That color scheme is spot-on man.

Is the "For competition use only" placard "functional", per se, or is that more of a joke. What I mean is, is that a requirement for some reason? It does have a valid VIN, right?

Historically I've never been a big Honda fan (always go for the underdog) or a four stroke fan, but that thing has got to be nicest looking "modern trike" I have seen, To be honest after I got done staring at it the first time, I couldn't help but check out the KFX's to see if a modern Tecate would be possible but the frames dont look quite as conversion friendly as the Honda's... Now I have to figure out a way to get the idea out of my head...

not really sure if its a requirement and you are correct its doesnt have a valid vin but i did cut the vin off the quad frame that i have a title for in case i need to go that route in the future

TPC's don't have VINs? That sucks. I would have thought you could stamp the vin from the quad frame on the neck of the TPC frame. How do people get around the registration requirements that are popping up everywhere? I know in AZ now you HAVE to be reg'd and have a freaking license plate on your trike. It's retarded but that's the way it is now.

I absolutely love this bike. The 350x headlight and front fender look great on it, as does the seat. The detail is top notch, great job!

fire1
08-15-2011, 01:15 PM
thats the reason i saved the vin plate off the quad frame i used in case i sold it to someone that has to have it. Virginia doesnt require atvs to be registered or titled.

atctim
08-15-2011, 01:24 PM
All of the quad conversions we have done - we cut the VIN off the quad and weld it to the neck of the trike conversion - thus title VIN and registration are good. Remember - quads are registered as "ATVS" not "3 or 4 wheelers" - a 3 wheeler is an ATV.

Gotta have one of these bad boys to ride alot of trail systems in PA and other bordering states - and gotta have a title to get one.

Yea Tim is right, us PA boys gotta go through all that licence, registration, and liability insurance junk to legally ride any parks in PA I still havent figured out how I'm gonna eventually be "legalized" in PA, all the atvs/atcs I buy usually never have a title and I believer it is an utter pain to get a lost title in order to get registered.

Sorry for the jack Fire, I love how you did that "Retro" 350x look/color scheme, and the 450X logo on the seat is icing on the cake

Again, nice job on the retro styling & attention to detail. Enjoy it!

For some FIRST hand information on registering the tpc, It is ILLEGAL to place a vin from another vehicle on one, "welding the old vin onto a new neck" is not legal. Moving the vin from any original location will red flag you real quick in cali that its stolen.

Its really simple and easy actually. You go down to DMV and ask them for the "custom build form" with that, you take the receipts for the items you bought to build your machine, this could be from paypal/ebay, previous, pink slips, basically everything you have that built the bike. In the TPC case we had a receipt for the kit, the pink for the quad, and the pink for the bike it was built off of, We pay a little tax, and registration and we get a new pink for a custom build. THAT IS THE LEGAL WAY. Every state will have some sort of custom build paperwork to fill out.

Do they keep the CRF's VIN# and just transfer it over to an ATV title? Seeing as how a CRF neck was used...

it's not the CRF neck, the CRF is aluminum. TPC has new necks made that is welded in. it has numbers on the neck that is more of a model number and TPC build info but it will not qualify as a VIN. i am not sure but i think is part of the reason for the mandatory tag that said competition use only.

Thanks alot for compliments but I dont think i ever said the 250r was being sold to finance this project . Whether it be good or bad im the type person I build I sell and move to what I consider a bigger better project. I owned a speed and fabrication shop for 10 years and In the begining I would get attached to projects and didnt want to let them go so I would always try to do better on the next one . So for me aside from loving 3Wheelers and a passion to keep it going building and aquiring all the parts is a big part. I have been busy rounding up parts for another 250r and I just bought a CR500 that has a future in 3 Wheeling...lol . So I haven't given up on 2strokes just a little break in the action and not to mention my daugther started college last year so I had to slow my pace abit. So hopefully more to come ......Thanks again to everyone for the compliments

But isn't the rear have of the quad "that vehicle"? The original location is gone with the custom modification. I guess here in PA things are most likely different than out in Cali. I have all of the paper work with mine and the original stamping from the quad is where the VIN belongs one 3 wheelers and bikes.

Again - not being from Cali - other states are much different. Here in PA - the DMV has nothing to do with ATVs - the DCNR handles all of the ATV registration here.

I thought the "for competition only" and "No Vin" had everything to do with the trike ban put back into effect with the CPSIA legislation and this was just to stay under the radar for selling new trikes????????????

Regardless - sorry for hi-jacking - your machine styling looks good -

In the army we had a lot of acronyms. My favorite was K.I.S.S. It stands for "Keep It Simple Stupid". I am in now way calling you stupid, your information is correct and very pertinent. In my personal experience, however, what the registry doesn't know won't hurt them. I obviously do not steal machines and swap numbers, etc... But if I were to make/buy a TPC, I personally would just transfer the VIN and register it. The few people who would know that it was done wrong are behind a desk somewhere, not out in the field. (I hope) I am not saying this is the best idea for everybody, that's just how I roll. If I can avoid making mountains of mole-hills, I will.

Tim just posted at the same time I did, and he makes some very good points as well. When combining and altering machines, at what point does one machine become the other? That's kind of how I look at it. Also as Tim said, here in Mass the DMV has nothing to do with ATV's. That's handled by the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection).

Very good info boys.

As long as you have a bill of sale with all the PO's info(and it wasn't stolen in PA), it's not hard to get a title... I did it with my 350x... and insurance was around $24/year.

IMO it's worth it. 250R's are a dime a dozen, even in decent shape. And so are TRX450R's and CRF450R's. I think a good ballpark figure is around $7000, depending on how much you pay for your donor bikes. If you can pick up a TRX450R for cheap, then all you need is the CRF components to complete it (I think it's the forks, frame, tank/plastics).

At one point I was contemplating selling off all my trikes just to get the funds for the project

You know you should see if you could make the cover of Dirtwheels, even if its an April fools issue saying Honda is building trikes again.

Yeah that's awesome man. I saw the dirt wheels mag today.

Sucked that there was no name of "TPC Trikes" whatsoever though.

Plus they got it wrong and said it was the dirt bike motor.

I have been told by several it was sold into Ohio, and " trashed", beat into the ground. I do not know this personally. Just what 3 or 4 guys have told me.
