I am in the midst of rebuilding from frame up at the moment and i am stumped.
(i dont mean to keep posting threads i just need help!!) My swingarm has a brake drum on it hinse it must be an '81 swinger, but my frame still has the '82 sticker and my vin and everything is '82. I am having trouble with the front of the swingarm were there was x2 nylon maybe? bushings, x4 dust caps, x2 metal colars that go inside the nylon. Well i was wondering if this was the way its supposed to be because it had MAJOR slop in it. And when i took it apart the colars fell right out and they were way wobbly in the nylon. Now i have some ideas for maching out bushings but was wondering if this is the correct set-up or not. Also my bearing spacer inside the rear of the swinger has a nice gouge in it and was going to machine one out but was wonderin how tight is that supposed be in there? Also have more small quick rebuilding questions if anyone can help.

You are talking about a 30 year old machine here. And I don't remember the stock bushings being nylon. Looks like you may have some serious work ahead of you here. First you have to check your swinger bushing area to make sure it is round. You may just want to purchase an aftermarket swingarm bearing kit for the front of your swinger. I would personally go with the 82 swinger, disc brake, which was a big improvement over the 81 drum set up. Former owners have been know to do some silly things, which means big money repairs years down the road. Just the way it is and several of us have had to deal with finding those ever so enjoyable previous owner "repairs"! LOL Hang in there and fix it right. You'll be much happier in the long run.

Just put together my 81. I had 4x metal collars that were lock-tight in (2 on each side) then 4x rubber dust caps with washers (again, 2 on each side). I had no slope or play. But then again, I'm using an 81 frame and 81 swing arm. Also broke down and bought new dust caps (the little stuff always costs too much). You have a manual?
