200x always in neutral

So I just picked up an '85 200x for $100 and it starts up really good and everything but when I put it into gear its always in neutral. I feel it go into gear but still nothing anyone got any ideas? The guy I bought it from thought it would be the clutch I just want to make sure before I go and order in a clutch and rip the side all apart.

Either the clutch plates or possibly the tranny shaft at the sprocket might be stripped out .

Sounds like you clutch isn't "letting go" so to speek. If you feel it go into gear when you shift and still it doesn't move. I would take the cover off and inspect it before ordering anything though.

I had that issue a while back and all it took was some clutch cable ajusting. Mine was too tight

same here had the same problem and my clutch arm wasnt releasing all way. take the cable off the arm then put it in gear and see it it works, then ajust cable accordingly

My experience with those 200x's have almost always been the sprocket stripping on the trans shaft. Pull the sprocket cover and check.
You will see a bunch of silver metal shavings if it is stripped.
It is a 5 minute check, but you will need to split the cases to do the repair. I bought one years ago, that had the same issue.

What if you disconnect the clutch cable or loosen it completely, put it in gear and see if you can roll it back and forth?
NOT running of course.

That may tell you if the clutch is biting if it won't roll.

There should be free manuals in the 'world class help' section
but they don't usually address specific real world issues.

Is it almost like the chain fell off?
It clunks into gear but you let the clutch out and nothing happens?
Is this new? new to you?
did you ever see it run correctly?
did it ever work that you know of and it just got bad to this point?

Well I tried taking off the clutch cable nothing happened and the sprocket isn't stripped. I never seen it run I bought it about 5 days ago and that's how I got it so cheap. it had the clutch cover off and it looked good inside. I put it together just to make sure it ran because if not I would have kept it as a parks bike but it starts up just fine but when I put the gear shift down I hear the clunk as if you were putting any bike in gear but it just won't go. I am really thinking it's the clutch I just got to get the special socket to take it off. Anyone know where I can get one? I called Honda near where I am and they wanted $50! I also have a spare transmission off another x cause the engine went on thst one so I have endless parts.

Alright long story short the socket came in and turns out it was a wrong size so I ended up grinding a socket out of an old impact socket so I got the old clutch off and it was well wore out. So I put on the clutch that I have from my spare transmission and put it together using the manual so then I put it in gear and when I spun the clutch lifter plate it would move the trike but wasn't grabbing to the engine. I then went and started to put the crankcase all back on and before I hooked up the kick starter gear and that little cover I wanted to try the clutch just to make sure it works and such. So I hooked it up and when the clutch is just normal without me pulling on the handle and in gear its like I'm in neutral. But when i pull on the handle engaging the clutch it the transmission grabs with the engine. So it seems like somehow my clutch is backwards unless I am missing something anyone have suggestions?

I looked over the manual again and I think I got it.... 5 friction discs and 4 clutch plates not 4 friction discs and 3 clutch plates
