hi, i'm fairly new here too, and recently bought a 1983 185s. to get to neutral, keeping lifting the shift pedal up, it is the highest spot, then kick it down to go through the gears. it is a straight shift pattern. five speed. I don't believe that there is a clutch lever, it is semi automatic.

I have never owned a 185s but my friend did and it was really weird, his clutch lever was really stiff also and every time you pulled it the back brake would engage

No reverse on the 185s, just 5 forward gears. You click the shifter down to shift up, neutral is all the way at the top and 5th is all the way down.
You can download the 1982 owner manual from here: http://campaigns.hondampe.com.au/Motorcycles/manuals/atv/own82atc185s.pdf. Main difference between 82 and your 83 is front suspension.
