They say it's a regular maintenance issue for the 90/110 types.

I must be running out of things to fix or worry about.

Thanks

the 200 too use this kind of filter....it's a good thing to clean it when you have to remove the clutch cover to repair something, but most will not remove the cover only to clean it

I have a 200s wich like 500x has a centrifugal filter. I have not cleaned it since I picked it up a few months ago and I know the guy I picked it up from never did. And he had it for 4 years :o but I do think I'm going to go ahead and clean mine soon.

my 125 has one and yes i checked the filter when i first got it. suprisingly it was very clean, but then again the old man that had it before me kept it serviced every year.

I put a new clutch in my 86 200x this spring and had the drum off. It was very clean one or two flicks of greasy dirt. That was the first time it was apart since new. I have parted out lots of atc's and 4- wheelers and only ever seen one out of 20+ that was dirty. It was one that had been swamped and filled with muddy water. I would not pull it apart just to clean the drum.

I agree, I cleaned mine just because I had it apart. There wasn't much crud in it.

Only on my rebuild. Clean.

My 125m has been driven daily since new in 1984.
I just cleaned that filter... There was not a spec of anything on it. Useless...
Aslong as you change your oil before it gets dirty, you would have nothing to worry about.

I had an 82 110 engine and a 79 90 engine apart last year. They had the nasiest crud in the centrifugal filters. I mean, 3/8" build up. Nasty. Also, both engines had black sludge int he bottom of the crankcase so that's a pretty good indication of the lack of care they got.

Is that the little screen above the drain plug?

^ No, it runs off the crank. I've seen some filthy and others just a bit dirty. I change oil often so I don't make a big deal out of getting around to it....

I'm a little curious if Everyone in this thread is talking about the same thing.. He's talking about the centrifugal oil "filter" 3 locktighted screws,on the crank,,and generally they are PACKED full of gray grime!!.. Now,,granted,,I'm used to seeing customers machines,,getting rebuilt,,that have been neglected. But I have never seen a clean one! EVER! . Are some of you talking about the screen in the bottom of the case? Just curious!! Yes,,Doc,,clean them badboys out! Heat around the screws Carefully to loosen the locktight.. Then impact,,that's how I do them anyhow.. Not saying I NEVER broke one,,or two.. I stil can't believe Honda designed this???!!! NOWDAYS,,I would believe it in a heartbeat!!!

atc007, i'm talking about the one inside the clutch, not the lower flat screen.

I don't recall seeing this in the manual or the parts diagrams.

You've got a very well maintained machine then!! As you already said!

It's not" in the clutch", it is on the crank in front of the primary drive gear and that drives the mainshaft; And yes, the 3 little phillips screws call for heat and an impact screwdriver or they aren't coming out. I replace them with M4 S.S flat head screws. On some motors they are filled with aluminum residue and black goo.

I also agree that this is one of Honda's worst ideas, it ranks right up there with the 200X kicker gears being inside the center cases.

^ No biggie, it's a good thing that should be maintained. It's pretty easy to confuse people here at 3WW :D

Atc007, i am also talking about the one on the crank. We love to change our oil... lets just say that. I spend more on oil than i do on gas.

change out my clutch last week. Pulled the screen out and surprisingly it only had 2 small dirty spots.

Are we talking about the oil rotor cup? If so I cleaned the one on my 84 200es and it was dirty. It was out of curiosity more than anything. There is a discussion in the Big red Riding Group I started on this very question http://www.3wheelerworld.com/group.php?discussionid=529&do=discuss. I think I would do it on any machine I just aquired, but after that, regular oil changes should suffice. Unless you swamp or do something silly to really contaminate your oil.

The problem is that most Hondas don't get taken apart for 25 years; So all the "break-in" aluminum and any other contaminants are in that rotor.......

If you do a top end, the rotor will have bits of green gasket you scraped off and the aluminum from breaking it in.

Some of these cranks are LH threads so please read your book so I don't buy a bunch of motors with junk cranks.

Our local bike shop guy does a lot of
break in oil changes and he just shakes his head at the amount of
(mostly aluminum) that comes out with the first oil changes
on factory fresh machines.

I pulled mine last year when I got my 200x from the original owner. Never asked him if he cleaned it but it was spotless, so after 25+ years, I am assuming it was done previousy which is
