hey, how do you put a can back in and get the timing perfect. I know the motor has to be at TDC, but then what do I do? thanks

There are manuals available here in the world class help section. Line up the T on flywheel, and the circle on the cam sprocket goes at the top, lining up w the small notch in the top of the head. Then tighten timing chain, reverify it's still in time, adjust valves and ride.

Loosen the cam chain auto tensioner??

I've seen quite a few threads about this lately.

Wonder if the 'search' key would help?

I remember turning the crank(s) WITH the direction of travel and then
backwards to align stuff.

Timing chain slop can throw you off too.
so make sure you turn everything in the direction of the drive side direction of the chain
as opposed to pulling the cam around with the tensioner side....if that makes any sense.

Loosen the cam chain auto tensioner??

is that the bolt underneath the rubber plug at the bottom of the jug?if so, do yu jsut loosen the top bolt or the bigger one too? thanks

Yes its under the little rubber plug, loosen the 14mm bolt to free up the tensioner a bit..

I remember something funny about tensioner adjustments.
with a few different details.

Not exactly sure about yours in particular but
something like, loosen this one but Never loosen that one and then retighten something or other.

Final adjustment may want to be done with then engine running on some engines.

Maybe I should read the manual before I try to help.
It's comforting for me to see stuff in print, but then I still worry if it's right.
Apparently some folks have had a bit of trouble downloading manuals in the last day or so
but I think it's working.

It would sure be nice to get it fixed with this summer weather, eh?

yes it would, but I tried all of that stuff with no luck... I think tomorrow Im gonna get my main engine guru to help me out alittle bit. otherwise Im bringin it to college with me. Im in marine and small engines, so my instructors will know what to do

Maybe I should read the manual before I try to help not a bad idea.TDC is TDC it doesnt matter what stroke it is on. its been a long time since I worked on a honda. but if I remember correctly line up the O mark on the cam gear with the o mark on the head with the piston TDC.

Point well taken. I'll erase that line.

Somehow, someone on here got theirs 180 out.
The point was to kinda see for onesself, in print from a manual before bending valves.

Now you've got me wondering if the crankshaft counterweights would rather be
in a certain position relative to the power stroke.
Prob doesn't matter since we've never heard about it.

Thanks again

the counterweights on the crank will always be in the same postition at TDC. the intake, compression, exhaust stroke is determined by the cam position. if someone were 180 out they would have to have the mark on the cam 180 off or they set the cam timing at BDC

There are definitely some interesting test questions on this site
for his shop teacher.

Maybe he can get some extra credit.

Did you guys get much flooding?
Dad's still got 2 bridges out on his road to town in upstate.

no flooding in my area. 98600xc did you get it together yet? also check that the chain isn't bound up at the bottom

Here's what you do take the flywheel bolt out and line the flywheel key way up with the notch on the top of the head. Your piston will be at at TDC then put your cam in lobes facing down. Then line up the O mark on your cam sprocket with the notch on top of the head. Also like ben said make sure the chain isn't bound up in the bottom
