I can't believe it. I've wanted one of these for nearly 10 years then finally found one back in February of this year. And now 7 months later I found a second. The first one was about 35 miles from my house, the second was about 50. Both run great. I love these things. Click for larger pics.

Thanks and yeah they run pretty good. They are a 250cc 2-stroke after all. Its nothing like a sport model but it's not supposed to be, theres no expansion chamber or anything. I raced my cousins 1985 200X and completely smoked him. It was not a race at all. I'm sure with some port work and exhaust you could really get them to run. Polaris used that same engine in the quads for a lot of years to then engine itself is/was fairly popular.
Edit, I just noticed you have a 1985 200x, now it looks like I said that becaue you have one but I assure you thats not the case. And with that piston I'm sure yours runs a lot better than stock.

Very nice! How about some 360 pics, Better yet some video of them on the trails would be sweet. I've only seen polaris trikes once in a video on this site and that was from an old polaris commercial I believe.

Is that like pinch belt drive like a snowmachine?
aka
infinitely variable transmixer?
I had a harley golf cart 2 stroke like that and to go in reverse,
the engine would stop and then restart in reverse....
as in the engine ran BACKwards.
I had no idea and still wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it for myself.

nice find . they arnt exactly easy to come by. yes they have a drive line colse to what is found on a sled.

Yeah the belt drive is infinitely variable just like a snowmobile, Polaris was making snowmobiles long before this came out so they just used that same technology. Polaris still uses belt drive today.
As far as I can tell it goes just as fast in reverse as it does forward. Obviously it gets way too unstable to run 45mph in reverse but the ratio feels the same to me.
I have heard of those Harley golf carts that run the engine backwards for reverse but I've never seen one.

Yep. I found both of them on St. Louis Craigslist. I was looking for about 10 years. The first one I saw on craigslist back in 2008 and it took me 3 years to get it for the price I wanted. The second I just saw yesterday and bought it. The first one was near Prarie du Rocher IL and the second was near Campbell Hill IL.

I kind of didn't want to say because I've seen others on this forum get them for like $300. Mine were not that cheap and what else can ya do, you can't really just find another one! I wanted them bad so I paid a lot more than $300.
The first one, the guy wanted $2000 but QUICKLY dropped to $1000. It had not ran in a long time. The fenders are in great shape but it also came with NOS front and rear fenders and NOS forks, that stuff might be worth some money itself. I told him I'd give him $700 which I thought was a lot for a non-running 3-wheeler, but I really wanted it. He knew it was rare and wanted maxium price. The seller got kind of mad but I kept in touch and finally got it for $700 3 years later. He said it was running since I saw it last but I could tell it had not. It was still missing the battery and still had the same, old, clogged fuel filter on it. I cleaned the carb and bought a new battery. It runs GREAT.
The second one was in running condition. Seller was asking $800. I got that for $700 as well. So I paid $1400 for the pair. I'm happy with that price but I know others on here get them a lot cheaper. I'm happy just to have them. I'll never sell them so I'm not too worried about the price. I think they were a good deal.

Very nice! I have the Clymer manual from when we had a pair of Trail Bosses back in the day. It covers Scrambler has well. I know a lot of people don't like Clymer but by bikes are not really needing any work anyway but I appriciate the offer.
I like the wheels, are those just painted stock wheels?
jeswinehart
09-18-2011, 07:45 PM
Yes, stock wheels. I did not care for the gold wheels at all since mine is a 86 which meant it has the silver tank emblems (85 was gold)
The paint has held up eceptionally well. I sand blasted, primed and painted
I used to have extra emblems but gave them away to Mik 6 and ATC Tim (I think it was Tim). If I come across any more I will keep you in mind.
You done well with your money, nice buys on both.

Yeah I've been looking for some tank emblems. I was not aware of the color difference. I guess the PVT emblem on the clutch cover would follow that same color code? One of mine is silver and the other is gold.
The one I bought first is the one that is missing the tank emblems. The guy I got it from says he has them NOS as well but he could not find them. He told me that after the fact so it was not a selling point. He said he will find them and get them to me. I still don't have them though. They would probably be easy to reproduce don't you think? I wish someone would do that, probably not enough demand though. I'd probably buy 4 of them.

Yep, they call it a PVT. Polaris Variable Transmission. The ratios are infinite. I would be completely impossible to list them all.

Well that sure is something to think about. How do I do it? I will give it shot! Well as long as it does not get too difficult. Sounds like a fun little job to try.
