My Team Yamaha Tri-z 250

I was cleaning out the garage today, so I figured I would post some pictures of my 1986 Tri-z 250 racer. This is the only non Honda trike that I own. From what I understand, it was an original team yamaha bike that was used mainly for flat track racing. It has a calfab swingarm which is in awesome shape with no cracks, and also an aluminum top mount tank. It currently has a Phase 2 Motor with DG pipe which is not original, however I do have the long rod motor and Bills pipe that will go in once I get to restoring it. Check out the old school decals on the fenders and the graphics on the tank. Thanks, xrider

that is really great but..... if its a flat track racer u REALLY need flat track tires on that thing. it would look great. i have those rear tires on one of my odyssey's

Thanks for the good comments guys. It originally was a flat track racer, the previous owner swaped out the tires. I will end up setting it back up for flat track when I restore it, which will include new rims and tires. Thanks, xrider

So nice to see stuff like this. Personaly the desire to tear something like that apart and make it "like new" is overwhelming, but the reality is that leaving it in its 1985/86 condition as you seem to have is the best way to preserve such a treasure. Thanks for sharing man!

For the most part it looks like an 86'...frontend(the front hub has two casting marks mfg/date of cast), radiator guards, plastic. There are some questionable items to indicate a peiced together machine. The frame...the overflow bottle should be located shifter side. Not to say they elimanated it for weight but they left the thermostat???(pic 4: tuff to see if the tab for the strap is still there, they could have cut it but the paint looks org.) The axle, rear hubs, sprocket hub are 85'-1/2 which I believe the frame may be too. The bottom end is a 6speed correct?
Still a very nice Z and the fact it maybe peiced together(indicates to me). The TEAM YAMAHA historical nature of a real factory race machine(SUPER RARE). If you think about it either a very rich guy had 2 machines, then added the tank and swinger(which is my DREAM part) then raced it; or the Team sourced parts to better the machine as they became available. How much of the history have you been able to gather? To add value I would be on the hunt to find the org. rider who may have raced it. KEEP it org...IMO I wouldn't touch the paint and only steam clean it and be careful not to remove the paint. No doubt even if it's NOT a TEAM Z....it's still period correct and has the BEST of the BEST add-ons.

Nice find. Did you find this trike in Ohio as well as the R?

Front tire is oem 85. The tank and Cal-Fab are cool pieces. I still have some of those Team Yamaha tank stickers from back in the day when they sold em outa the back of Dirt Wheels. I put them on all my Yamahas growin' up, and even stuck one on my bedroom window when i was a kid in the 80's.......Was there til the day my parents sold the house bout 10 yrs ago. My guess? I would say it would be a stretch to say it's a factory bike based on a few bolt ons. I also thought Yamaha pulled factory support for Tri-z's at the end of 85?

Very cool bike. But one thing to note: the "Team Yamaha" decal on the gas tank was not, and never was, used by Team Yamaha. They always ran the corporate logo, That decal could have been added after the fact. Also, no factory Yamaha riders used Gear Racewear back at that time. But that thing is super cool regardless!

Thanks for the comments guys. It is a 6 speed motor. That and the plastics had me thinking it was an 86, however this is my only Yamaha so i don't know all the differences yet LOL. The plan for me is to restore it back to a period correct flat tracker. It isn't going to be ridden very much, mainly just a show bike. It was alot harder to find a tri-z with a Calfab swingarm than it was a 250r thats for sure.

LOL. Yeah I heard they were pretty rare so when I saw this one with the tank also, I jumped on it. I actually found this one in North Carolina. It was sitting outside in the guys yard, which was basically a small ATV junkyard. I was definitely glad to haul it out of there. The 250r I picked up in Athens, Ohio. My goal now is to eventually find an 86 Tecate w/ a Calfab so I will have each of the big 3.
