Thing is retarded powerful. I love it...wheelie monster in every gear.
It is NOT a S/H bike.
Came with a few issues, working them out though. Did all the frame re-welding myself. It isnt the prettiest, but it is strong. I havent touched a TIG torch in a LONG time, and have only touched on aluminum a handful of times.

NICE! that crazy the about of power/vibs that motor prob had to crack the frame. was this a service honda cr500 or just a homegrown job. Id of thought service honda would of known of areas to brace better for a beast of a motor.

its homegrown. those cracks are where the guy joined 2 pieces of tubing together

But Service Honda doesnt to the greatest frabe fab work either. Some real booger jobs they called frames got out the doors...

For the record, those 2 pictures of the botched frame are NOT on my bike, they are on a Service Honda bike that DID make it into the hands of the customer.

Being a welder I can surely say that service Honda is playing with peoples lives!

That is just plain crazy!

luckily, because of all the stink that frame and a few others caused, I think S/H is a little more careful about what they do. But I'd buy one from Stoffers Racing over any other maker in a SECOND.

Bit of an update.

Almost blew it up, it blew the right side of the base gasket out. Apparently this is a common problem, because Cometic only makes a rubber-coated aluminum base gasket for the CR500.

The thing runs RETARDED. It doesnt run like a 250 at all. The top end of the RPM feels like trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro on this thing compared to a 250, it doesnt rev out or pull on top like a 250. its a totally different riding experience. ALL of the power is midrange, and while pipe and setup has something to do with it, it will never run like a 250 due to the lack of a powervalve.
The low/midrange pull on this thing is simply stupid. It can be struggling to run in 4th gear idling along, twist the throttle and BOOM wheelie and epic acceleration.
4th gear holeshots is a breeze.
To keep it accelerating, you have to short shift it like crazy. I find myself shifting my 250 entirely too fast when I jump back and fourth, Ill bog it shifting 2nd to 3rd LOL!

Thing moves a massive amount of dirt too, it simply destroys the ground.

I can throw my 250 around like a toy. I can use all the power she has to give just about anywhere except an MX track, railing through corners with it pinned still escapes me. no problem.
The 500, I have a hard time controlling, all it wants to do is ride on the rear tire. you cant just twist the throttle, you have to be nice with it. sideways wheelies in a berm are scary!

While it runs totally different than I was expecting, after getting used to keeping it where she likes to run, the power is simply astounding. Starting it sucks though :/

All in all, I LOVE the thing, but it is the only bike I have ever rode that repeatedly scares me

Wicked looking bike!!! I love it! Ive ridden my brothers '97 KX500 a few times and it makes me want to get a 500 pretty bad, the low end grunt is AMAZING. Yours has the same frame as my bike and I really like how it handles. If I got a 500 Id want it in the same chassis as my 250 like yours is. Very cool bike Ill have my own eventually!

You just need to get rid of that big ugly "F" behind the CR in the graphics hahaha. May that be my only complaint!

startign the cr 500's ther eis a trick to them

step 1 turn gas on and hold throttle open and lean on side for a sec

step 2 rotate kicker to top dead center and right after the compressionstroke and tdc there is a little notch before it starts the downstroke stop there

step 3 bring kicker back up to top of stroke and get a good solid kick to it.

if you do those 3 things just that way they will start every time!! i have owned about a dozen cr 500's a half dozen kx 500's and 2 yx 490's so i do know what i am talking about with this.

Took me a lot of saving, and a LOT more looking. I have less into this one than if I were to convert my CR250, and now I have 2 bikes.

I was thinking that, but at the same time I like it, it makes people look at it closely.

Thats pretty much what I do, except I give her a few primer kicks as well. It usually starts fine, but it has already claimed a kick lever, and I dont want that to repeat itself, or break the cases. It can tire you out in the woods when it stalls as well, and if you were in a goofy position, you'd never start it, I have to give the kicker everything I have lol.
Decomp fitting will pay for itself, it will surely save me two kickstart levers.

I stalled mine in the mud once on my way to work. It made me an hour late for work and caused a minor fit.

Yep. Plastics are stock from when the bike was a 450.

Just got the head back from Millar racing engines http://www.millarengines.com/. He fit a decompression fitting to it, and man, what a difference! Highly recommended!!
