Neither one of those machines have a hi/lo range sub tranny. It's quite simple actually. In neutral, you select either hi or low. Then you have four five gears in each range. It can not be selected "on the fly", it's got to be selected in neutral when not moving.

Oh I see thanks for the explanation. I was pretty sure these I have didnt have it but had never really heard of it before I got on here. Have recently picked these 2 up havnt messed with em in a long time but really enjoying the 200 havnt gotten the 86 running yet. Where is the selector located for the hi low?

If you had a sub tranny the lever would be located on lower left side of engine, where the drive sprocket is.

If your 125 has the sub-tranny it's not an 86. It would be an 84-85 model. The 86 125M is a fairly rare machine and it will be tough to find parts for.

Is low gear mainly used for uphills & trails? Can't say I've used it much.

yeah, basicly low keeps it from "riding the clutch" on the steep hills, tight trails and heavy pulling.

sidenote: i just worked on my local trails yesterday pulling a tire around to groom the trails and i had to use low, if not it would ride the clutch almost constantly in 2nd. unless i would speed up, but then it was whipping the tire around enough i was afraid it would hook a tree or stump around the corners.

Thanks for the pic Jon this 86 125 I have the motor looks a little different than that one....it surprises me how much they changed these from year to year. Lot of little stuff. The difference is your jug is more parallel than this one is. This motor is more upright.

You have a somewhat rare and sought-after machine there. You don't see those every day.

I have an 82 200 I got from a cattle rancher..... been using for parts. I had bought the grab bar tool box and bracket off ebay before I found this 82. Had all of those parts ..could have saved myself some money. But all the plastic is good and it had the front and rear racks on it I had powdercoated and using em on my 81. I bought my 81 not running either but after a carb rebuild and a new stator its a first pull machine now. Had a new crank installed on a overhaul 3 years prior so runs like a champ now.
