I was searching google to see if I could find any race videos from races I ran back in the 80's and saw a thread with Mike Coe on this site. Needless to say it has been the coolest week I've had in quite some time, reading about the inner workings of Team Honda from way back when. It wasn't until the discussion went to Lake George and races I actually ran (and won) that I tried to post some replies, to no avail :( I would dearly love to join the discussion there, but I guess it'll have to wait a couple of months. The thread is already 5+ years old, so what's a couple more months, right? ;)

totally agree with that. i need to post a question for the first time! usually i just have to read through all the threads and get my answer that way... not this time =/
I fully agree with you, more bs posts and those who have been members for a while and don't like to clutter up the board now have to post just to be able to post elsewhere where they might actually be able to contribute.

Now if I am a scammer looking to make money off some poor innocent buyer or seller do you really think 2 months is gonna deter this activity? Most scammers can be spotted by anybody over the age of 12 from a mile away. On other forums that I am a member of the scammer usually ends up being a veteran member that is going through a hard time ie. loss of job, divorce, foreclosure, bankruptcy etc. and chooses to scam other members and just disappear. This is the internet people. Although a few of the members here have probably met face to face before most probably have not. If it smells like a scam it probably is, just run the other way. Also always receive payment through paypal or by USPS Money Order. Is it really that hard to understand?

I agree. And it dosent take 2 long miserable months to learn to use a sight. Its actually kind of frustrating cause i wanna be part of it be able to buy and sell parts, learn, ask questions and everything. But I have to wait?

Cool site, in my Internet searches I have viewed plenty of what appear to be archive-type threads. Bought a 1985 Big Red two weeks ago, had one when I was a kid in the 80s and I always took good care of it then. Found a really nice one with good original Ohtsus, so I got to pick up where I left off 25 years later. I'm looking for what every other BR owner wants, another set of original tires and accessories lol. I have been a Willys jeep freak for years, so now I'm venturing into a new arena. So, I know how it is when fresh meat comes along wanting to get in on the action and find deals, blah blah blah. Just let me know when I'm one of

I wish the donation idea was possible as mentioned above but I like this site so the trials must go on lol,it would be nice to view the classified ads though because I would like to set up my profile with like a before and after pictures in the photo album but I need to find certain parts before I can do this. and share some of my trial and errors with other members who are doing the same or plan on doing like I do. I wish the classifieds were open to new members as buy only , not to post for sale, but to buy parts only until the trial period is over and proved ourselves worthy as new members to this site, I dnt blame administration one bit for this precautionary step though.

Brand new here, but much as I dislike Draconian measures to keep things square, it's sadly becoming more common so no crying from me (Sniffle.)
Never had more than a passing interest in trike ATCs, then today was driving home & saw a 1982 Honda 200 in pretty great shape with new rubber, so next thing you know it's in the driveway- For $250, had to own it! :Bounce It'll be a winter project, mostly clean, refresh, etc. I'm Super-Cheesed with it now! So found this place on the web & will soon beleaguer the more knowledgeable with tedious questions, like "What should my fenders smell like" and "Are tires available in Purple?" :p Chris

I'm a new member, I just bought my first three wheeler, very existed about getting into it and for hunting season. I am also disappointed to find out im not allowed to access classifieds until 2 months and 10 posts. I was hoping to buy some parts before the season starts. Now I won't be able to until the seasons over likely. I understand the reason for the two months period but don't want to post 10 useless posts that waste space either. I dont have 10 needs for posts. Whats the point of not allowing people to connect and buy parts? Fact is, it's just going to increase the amount of junk posts. Anyone should be able to see this....

Three wheelers are cool, but I had a go-kart and a mini-trike that were 2F1R like the Spyder, I never had stability problems (unlike Dirt Wheels)...Did they know how to ride?
I want to build a Quad based Reverse trike! (Very easy to make it Street Legal!)

I am having carb issues. I have a newer stock type carb,(has the weird bellows on top?) but the slide keeps sticking? It has been cleaned, new fuel used and will still hang up. I was thinking about trying to use a stock carb from some of my ATC/TRX 250r junk. Has anyone tried this? If so what jets and needle settings. The ES is all stock, just a yard/trail work toy. Hello everyone,
1st post and a huge fan of the site and Honda trikes!!!!
I traded for a 350X with engine in the frame as you could say a "roller" but allot of parts, bolts and the brake systems that were stripped off to paint the bike came in a handy to carry 5 gallon bucket of mess.
My issue and reason for the post is the rear brake stay bracket and the two bolts that go threw the bracket are about a 1/2 inch of from center on the bolts when attempting to bolt it up.
I have the Honda shop manual, understand the 85-86 rear brake difference, bought a different caliper, and brake stay and still am off from being able to mount this.
Since the brake stay from the bucket and a different one I purchased are the same I am thinking that who ever rebuilt the rear axle may have, could have put a different rear axle bracket on? else it just does not fit and I would have to drill the brake stay bracket about a 1/2 a drill bit out, and i do not want to rig it since I am trying to make it a restored trail king.
I can take and post pics or email people to explain what the heck I am talking about but hope someone else has figured out this issue and can help me out.
email is Bullyinflorida@yahoo.com and I again can try to post or email pics or a video of what I am having an issue with
Thnx

I have a 1985 ATC 200X that had the motor rebuilt by a professional. There was a rattle that started at high RPM's and when I called the guy who rebuilt it, he said that it was probably the cam chain. I loosened the adjuster bolt on the left side of the motor just a bit (like my manual instructed me to) took it for a little ride, revved the engine a bit and it just locked up. The motor seems seized because I can't move the kick start lever at all. I was just wondering if anybody had an idea of what it could be or what to look for before I have to tear it apart or pay for it to be done again. Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

wetsand the slide with 1000 gritt in direction of travel lightly then wipe down with machine oil and dab machine oil on cable in such a way that it runs down into the casing of the cable incase the cable is sticking n work everything back and forth repeatedly to free it all up, or are you talking about the plastic slide? thats vac regulated you may have a leak in the pre vac bellows if i\\the slide is sticking sticking open. also wetsand that slide and lube with machine oil inside carb and on slide. thats how i get em working again... ive got a 250es clone with exact carb. im planning a future old 80s 250 sto stroke mikuni 56mm conversion

Ok here's my story. I am a Honda Automobile Mechanic. I got into 3 wheelers in 1983, the guys I worked with were going to Pismo every month and invited me one trip. I was put on a 185s with a group going for a ride on Friday night after we got our camp site set up. Did well that first ride only dumped it twice trying to keep up with the other bikes (6 250r's) while upshifting while trying to down shift. The group I rode with would always have an experienced rider at the back to help anyone that fell or got lost.
After digging the big fish hook out of my throat I was at the Dealer on Monday and bought a 83 200x. I had figured it would be my wife's bike and after a learning process I would get a 250r. The next week we had our own truck and camper. The following we had a trailer to tow the bike on. About 4 months or 4 trips to Pismo later I got the 250r. Picked up a 300 kit and sent it to Curtis Sparks for some play porting. Decided to ride the 250 as it was for a couple of trips. What a mistake. It was so pipy that when I put the 300 kit on it was heaven.
Fast forward about ten years and a Divorce, sold or lost everything. Got into street bikes hence the Blue Viffer. Fast forward another 10 years now my son is back into 3 wheelers. He was put on the front of mine when he was 13 Months old and could not get enough in those days. He had also rode street bikes with me. Anyway after he got back into 3 wheelers he would call and tell me what he was doing. Ask if I would move out to where he was. And entice me on visits with renting quads to ride Jeep trails with him and his family. Finally this last year he talked to his Step Mom and asked if we would come out if he got me another 3 wheeler.
So he went and did it he got me a 1983 250r with a 300 kit. He was going to build it up and invite me out to Little Sahara Mosh 8. Well he didn't quite make it. He passed on in November.
I decided to keep the bike and get it back together properly with help from one of his friends. This is going to be my therapy Bike. I am going to be the Old Guy back on the sand and hopefully will have it together and not embarrass myself.

There is a ton of useful info here, however site is difficult to navigate. This ten post thing isn't all bad but don't see how it teaches you how the site works. Shows how to post in one area. Hope this doesn't affect any replies to my threads, as it is only my opinion. My 84 tecate is having clutch problems. Had to replace cable, then the return arm started sticking so I pulled it n greased it, still was sticking. Then I was ridding and something seemed to slip. Now the shifter won't come back up on its own or go into gear. Motor runs fine. Not sure if any of these events are related but just trying to give as much info as possible. Any help would be great thanks.

Reckon I made a mistake! I found this forum this morning and was reading some info about electrical problems on 1984 Big Reds, just the info I was needing. Then I went and registered and lost my place for the good info and can't get back to it. Anybody got any suggestions on how I can find those post. As I see it now, I guess I won't be able to ask any questions about my problem for 2 months. Is that correct? I'm not even sure I'll find my way back here if you answer this.

Hey just a little suggestion by a newb here...
I did read all the "starters" and have done my intro and even started a "build thread" before I posted this.
My self I found it perfectly logical to do so and get me started.
However, (and this is my suggestion), after reading the first post on this thread, some people (maybe foreigners?) do not understand that while in the first 2 months they can not post in most parts of the forums, there is nothing stopping them from starting a new thread in the member's commencement are and ASK FOR HELP, Parts or whatever they need.
So possibly adding this in plain english in the first post telling them to do so might make their life easier and ease the "you cant post" anxiety for the first months.
I know its worked for me. :)
Hope you guys find this "logical". Just me 2c.
Cheers,
Chris

So far and I hope final costs... (Pacesetter was free) new #40 chain $14.00, $105 for all new bearings(they were mostly hex shaft and a booger to find), $63 in shaft locking collars, new Predator motor $300. So many hard hours getting this back to condition. I will NOT do another one.

That explains a lot
In an effort to help new members familiarize themselves with the site and some of our habits here we've introduced a trial period for new registrations. During this trial period you'll be limited to this forum, the Introduction forum, and also Site/Feedback section if your having problems. Veteran members will be available to help answer questions, and you'll still be able to search and read in other portions of the site but you will be limited to posting in these areas only. Full access to post in the rest of the site is of course still 100% free. We only ask now that you spend some time in these areas first and learn more about the site first before we turn you completely loose. Those requirements are:
A registration time of 2 months or more.
At least 10 total posts on the forum. If you had existing posts before this was implemented, they will count towards your total. If you are new, then you'll need a total of 10 posts in the three above mentioned area before your given access to post elsewhere.
Again, you are still available to read all of the other existing threads and posts on the site, you just are not able to reply to them or make new threads until these requirements have been met.
Thanks for your patience and glad to have you here at 3WW! :)

Hi, I suppose I am what you call a "newbee". Not quite sure what a "post" is! Is that what I'm doing now by responding in a thread? Or, is a "post" the starting of a "thread"? I'm seventy three, and not sure I have enough time left to bring up ten different "posts". I have ben a member for two years and have enjoyed browsing the site on some occasions, mostly because of the two ATC's that I'm trying to decide what to do with. I have made a "post" asking for help titled "How old or rare is that US90 or the ATC110?", but have not learned much from it yet! Give me some insight as to what I might do and how to proceed.

Posts are the responses, and a thread is the whole collection of posts wrapped under one name (the link you click to get here). As of the time I'm posting this, you need 3 more and you will be able to respond in the other sections of the site since you have been here a long time :). I'm glad you are at least putting forth effort to learn this new stuff, my uncle is around 55 and complains he can't do anything on the computer, yet he puts no effort into learning it.
Oh just to make sure every thing is clear, on your post above this, right under your location is your post count, the total number of posts (including threads you started) on this site. At 10 you will be a "full member".

Hi again ps2fixer, in the interim between my last two "post" I have ben reading all 26 pages of this "thread". I didn't realize there was more that one page to it when I first arrived, so I guess I'm learning! Your current posting is by far the clearest and most informative posting of the bunch!, One observation that I might make a suggestion about is the added time it takes to reload each page, makes the reading very time intensive. For me about an hour and a half to read all 26 pages! Most of the time was reloading the cover sheet I believe, should be a way to make that reload faster. thanks again for your effort.

Thanks for the positive comment, I work in IT (Information Technology, basically work with computers all day), so I try my best to explain things out, and since you told us your age, I tried to keep the youth out of my message (I'm 26).
As for the pages, sadly we as users don't have control over that, not the fault of the administrators of the site, this software does not support users to configure the number of posts per page. However, it sounds like you might have a slow internet connection like dial up or a low "high speed" DSL package. Here is something you can do to make the pages load a little faster by having less stuff on them. At the very bottom of this page there is a drop down that says "---- 3WW Version 3.0", change that to "-- Vb4 Default Style" and the large image at the top and such won't be there anymore. This is called the skin, which is basically the general look of the site. If you don't like the different look, or it does not help, you can always switch back.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out :).

Hello everyone,
Since I have to post at least 10 things before I can get to the classifieds, I will start by introducing myself.
My name is Hunter, I am 27, I live in Arizonaand I own a beautiful 1985 ATC250R.
I polish TRX and ATC 250R fuel tanks in my spare time for cash in an effort to buy my kids a trx70, and an atc70 for myself (to ride along side my kids).
I have posted a couple of times in the past on this site, but I don't really mind the formal wait period, because I know that this site is the best place to connect with other ATC owners and swap stories and photos.

Hello there 3WW family!
I have been reading through some amazing information and story's from you guys for a little while now and have really thourally enjoyed it, seems like a very nice place/site to be apart of especially for the love of three wheelers! Just thought I mite chim in and introduce myself from across the pond.
My name is Jacko I am from Australia and have a strong passion for three wheelers since I was very young! 3 yrs I beleave [emoji6] and I also very clearly remember my dad riding a restored Honda 84' atc70 up our drive way one Christmas morning on the back wheels [emoji14] (he raced a 86' 250r flat track and other speedway) I loved the trikes and have been hooked ever since.
I currently am starting to get back into these awesome machines and have wanted to for quite some time.
At the moment I have two 74' 70s, one is fairly neat and the other is all original but in need of restoration.
I have plans of an 87' 200X and a 86' 250R in the near future...
Can't wait to start restoration on the 74' 70 and I will be sure to throw up some pics of the restoration and my other machines for you guys when I start and pick them up.
Very happy to be a part of the site and look forward to a long and happy 3ww relationship[emoji1]

I have owned my 85 250R since I was 16. I convinced my parents to purchase it for me from a local shop owner. Another customer had commissioned the build, and split on the bill. My parents bought it, and gave it to me for my 16th birthday. I have had it for the last 11 years, and I hope to leave it to my kids one day. This 250R will never bee for sale.207139

Hey folks new to the site been three wheelin' since the 70's ...yeah I'm that old!
Anyway if anyone knows where I can find an authentic Dunecycle roll bar or frame (springer) please let me know.
I was a dealer in the 70's and raced for a while (had to go support myself....that kinda ended it).
I am re-build/engineering a dunecyle at the moment and need a few parts. I might be interested in a whole machine depending on location and what parts are good. No engine needed unless you have a mac 101d!

You guys must really had a big problem with scammers and trolls here. I didnt expect a atv (atc) enthusiast site to have so many safeguards to enter. Ive been a part of more personal fourm sites that had less hoops to jump through than this. Im not complaining, im just surprised. That other site could use a system like this, especially considering how personal they get.

Been a memeber since 2007....this will be my 11th post!
I remember being able to access the classifieds. I sold my 250r through the classifieds here. I took a pretty long break because I was 3wheelerless for a few years.
I was wondering if someone knew the lug nut size for the Big Red, and had to post in it in the new member area. I still haven't received an answer so I just ordered the lug nuts and hope they are right.
How long after my 10th post do I have to wait to access and post in the rest of the site?
If you try posting a thread in the new member commencement, should it appear automatically or does it have to get checked first?

How does the post review process work? I spent some time typing up my exploits on my newest project, just to have it held back to be reviewed. Will edits to this post get reviewed as well?
Does this review nonsense stop when I finally make it to 10 posts? (I've been registered for years)
Thanks, just trying to see how this forum works now.

I don't know how it could be any more clear. You need 10 posts and 2 months of membership. If you have been a member for more than 2 months, you only need to get your post count up to enjoy the full site.

Some postings are selected by the forum software / programming to be reviewed by the moderators / admins before going public. I have some of mine selected as well. This is done as a means to help stop spammers. It's not perfect programming, but we do try to get the valid postings approved asap. All the mods and Admins have other things going on ( Family, work, hobbies, ect ) as well as helping run the site ( we help for free ).
Please be patient and we try to get to things as soon as possible.
Thanks

Does anyone know if a chain tensioner from an atc70 will work on a trx70. I know the trx is rubber but mine is chewed up and bent and slipping the chain. I actually prefer the gear type on the atc. Will the atc bolt on the trx?.....I could just pull off and swap but was hoping somebody has already tried it?

It is best to start your own thread to get better viability and to keep each thread on a single topic, however to answer the 185 vs 185s thing, it is only based on the year if there is an "s" at the end or not. Besides that I don't know of any other major differences.
For the carb, there should be some numbers on it some where kind of like a model number. The service manual generally says what should be on it factory, I'm sure if you made a thread about it and posted up a few photos someone could ID the carb, or at least say if it is factory or not.

I'm new here and just wanted to say thanks for allowing me to join. I'm also new to this forum posting and I'll try to get better at it. I have a 1986 ATC 250ES with a newly rebuilt engine, brakes, front and rear and bearings all around. I have a pickle and can't seem to find help anywhere so I've turned to using Google and found this forum. My pickle you ask????....... my drive shaft! It was broken when I got it and bought new from Ebay but it was too short and the end that goes into the final drive is way too big.
I can put a quarter in that end and it will not fit into the opening. The new one is the size of a fifty cent piece easy. I'm thinking a change was made to my rear end?? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ron

First I'll say welcome to 3ww! Second, it would be best to create a new thread to get more people to see your issue.
However... I deal with parts a bit and have never seen that large of a size difference in the drive shaft. 85-87 250es all had the same size pinion join (part the drive shaft goes on in the rear end), and a TON of other machines from the same erra has the same part number including the early shaft drive quads and 250sx. Going purely on memory, I think the normal rear end side of the drive shaft is pretty large, not sure about a fifty cent piece fitting, but a quarter probably would or be close.
If you could upload some photos of your rear end, broken drive shaft, and the new drive shaft, I'm sure someone will be able to spot what happened.
This is what the OEM drive shaft should look like -> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-ATC-250ES-250-ES-BIG-RED-3-Wheeler-OEM-Rear-Driveshaft-85-1985-1093-/151863618710?hash=item235bc6ec96:g:AhYAAOSw14xWLqP P&vxp=mtr
Maybe the seller listed the part you bought incorrectly? The drive shaft is no longer made, so unless you bought a NOS (new old stock) one which should have went for insane money ($200-300+), you either got the wrong model or a used one from something.

Thank you sir. I've looked at all of the one's on Ebay and they all are basically the same as the one I purchased. I've come to the conclusion my rear end has been "rigged". Ok so I've added the pictures for the drive shaft here and I have made an album of the differences in hopes of getting some feed back. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had one back in high school and thought this would be cool to ride with my son....he just keeps laughing as he rides by the shop on his Can-Am 250DS. Thanks again.223183223184223211223212223213

Pretty interesting, I don't know any other machines that interchange, but I know honda stuck with the same style diff for years and years. Does the swing arm look correct to ebay listings? 86 is different from 85 but both used the same drive shaft. If the swing arm looks correct then just the diff was swapped out. I don't think there are any numbers on them, but good photos of it might help id what it is.
I know some people have used the trx250 rear in the 250es, but I'm pretty sure the diffs are the same more or less. The swing arm is much different though, it would fit on a 250sx frame for a +3 inch in length.
It kind of looks like this one, but the spline count is off. http://www.ebay.com/itm/03-Honda-TRX250EX-Rear-Drive-Shaft-/171975483892?hash=item280a89a1f4:g:QT8AAOSwwbdWJ6a O&vxp=mtr
Is it welded together at the knuckle?
The easiest fix I can think of is to get a 250es or 250sx rear end and use the 250es drive shaft, but the rear ends are not cheap. I'd like to help ID the diff you have, since it might open up a new possible rear end for the big reds which is why they cost quite a lot, they get torn up and all that is left is other ones used from the 80s.
