Nice toys! I couldn't imagine shooting big game with a pistol. Probably because I'm a hand gun opressed Canadian, lol. It would be fun for sure. You must have to be close for accuracy....say 25-50 yards?

Chuckiedog: Well, the recoil is pretty sharp. But, as with anything, proper form and technique makes it pretty manageable.
Coolpool: sorry about your lack of handguns up there in the land of the Great White North. As to the effective range of the .44.... I am very confident I can place a humane, 1 shot, 1 kill shot on a whitetail inside of 40 yards with it right now. These weapons are capable of greater distance with precision custom handloading and of course a longer barrel with scope and practice.. Being that I just got it 2 days ago, I'm not really up to snuff with it. I predict I should be able to stretch my max range out to about 50+ yards once I figure out what rounds the weapon likes best, and I get alot more trigger time to practice up..... I know you can effectively take big game out to about 70+ yards with a .44 with 8-3/8" bbl and a scope. I like the challenge of open sights. But, I do still carry my scoped Remington 700 chambered in .270 Win for when they are just out of range for the hand cannon..... :naughty:
Next S@W on my list will be one of these 2:

Which would you guys go for next?? I dont have any autos yet, and I have wanted a nice 1911 since I was a kid. The 460 XVR is the fastest, flattest shooting handgun in production. 2330fps with a 200gr slug!!!!

Big pistol? Must be compensating for something. Probably own a Harley too. :P
Very, very nice pistol. I've always preferred revolvers myself, I have a Ruger Single Six in .22 mag that was the first thing I ever shot, I also have an old model Vaquero in .45LC. I even have the original leather holster, and book for the Vaquero and SS.
My favorite pistol I've ever owned though, was a .357 Python with an 8" barrel. Heavy sucker, but if you knew what you were doing it was an awesome firearm.

Nice S&W! Now you have one for each hand, lol. Never seen anybody hunt deer with a sidearm; must be a Yankee thing...

My dad has one of those, but it just has a 6" barrel. Awesome gun, great for coyotes, beavers, and bobcats...

Here in the South, we hunt with everything we can either:
A) Shoot
B) Send Flying
C) Stab With
D) Catch
E) Throw

I like the gun, shooting in a killzone at 60 yards is all about controlling the shakes if ya ask me.
Actually was practicing some longer shots with a glock 19 today. It's truly incredible what today's handguns can do. I was knocking water bottles down at 60-70 yards averaging two shots per hit.
Are you gonna handload or just buy some corbon?

Well, as much as I would love to start getting into handloading, I just don't have the extra time, money, room and kitchen pass from the wife to get into it. I always have alot of sticks in the fire between all the other seasonal stuff my family and I enjoy doing.
But, there is a business just 8 miles from me that is a licensed ammunition manufacturer/re-manufacturer. He does a real nice job and takes the time to load up a variety sample set of rounds so I can go send some downrange and see which the gun and I like best. And best of all, I take my empty brass up to him, and he reloads them for about 25% below store prices.. I know, I know, I can do it myself cheaper, but he really does a good job and it's his livelihood. He's gotta keep the lights on.
Right now I'm using some Hornady Lever Revolution 225gr tipped rounds for it. Sighted in with 240gr JHPs initially. There will be a little bit of trajectory difference with the Hornady's, but I'm not figuring on taking 60yd shots with it yet.
Chazz: No Harley here!!! (wisenhemier)
Stonewall: Handgun hunting is actually quite popular in some areas. Not as much as bow hunting, but i think its similarly challenging as bowhunting.

I really wish we could carry here; especially for the guys who travel the back country and/or bow hunt in Grizzly/Cougar country. I shot two types of pistols in the army, a Browning 9mm and a Sig Sauer (sp) 9mm. It was fun, but it seems I had a better chance of hitting the target with a rock, lol. I wish you luck with your hunt and post some pics of bambi.

Ridered,,have you ever been around a contender? Hands down one of my favorites! Hobbies for me do not exist right now. But,,growing up on a farm ,my Dad a former Marine,,,we hunted WAAAAAYYYY too much! My best friend is a FFL dealer,,he has EVERY cannon you can buy,,ALLL the banned Autos,,SKS'' etc,, and his contender has got to be our favorite. I think he LACKS 2 barrels from having every one! The 4570 will wake you up if you're not paying attention! We like it in the .223 for deer.. reaches way out there. And we are STICKLERS for a one shot one kill,HOW? We ONLY shoot them in the head. Period,,that's the rules,,if you can't poke em in the brains,,you don't shoot. I don't hunt anymore,,I observe : ) Dad was a S&W guy,,Guess I'm not so much. Given the 2 choices above ,i'd go auto next time,,,but shop around with a very open mind! There are some GREAT deals to be had on autos.

Coolpool: They don't allow handguns of any kind up there??? That sucks!
ATC007: Yes, I'm very aware of the Contenders. My father-in-law has one with 3 or 4 barrels for it. .223, 45lc/410, 35 Remington and .22. I agree, they are the ULTIMATE hunting handgun. But, I must say, they now have some tough competition in the S@W 460XVR. Have you seen the ballistics on a 460S@W Mag with a 200gr slug?? It's nothing short of awesome in the truest sense of the word....
