View Full Version : Spotted a Supposed Cagiva in Local Salvage Yard

Well, I picked up some stuff at a local ATV salvage yard today that has alot of trike stuff. I noticed something that looked like a 200x, and I got to looking more and it has a MUCH thicker, probably a +3, +4 axle, aftermarket hubs, completely odd swingarm, a rear shock that literally runs up the frame of the bike, under the tank, a VERY long cylinder for the shock mounted up at the downtube, the tank farther back on the frame, with custom tripple trees and white plastics all around.
I asked the owner if he'd like to get rid of it, and he said that it's a Cagiva(I've been pronouncing it "Ca-Guy-Va", apparently wrong) made by Tricky Dicks, and he's gonna hold on to it and make a fortune in a few years. No engine, no rear wheels, no seat, and it looks like one hub has a chunk taken out of it, and it's sitting in a salvage yard gathering rust.
I have a few pictures I managed to snap as well.
Anybody ever saw something like this? I asked if he knew what kind of engine was supposed to be in it, and he said 200X, but I kinda doubt that.
Can anyone give me any information on it? If it's real, I might have to make the guy an offer he can't refuse...........

That is a shame for something like that left to rust.

Not a cagiva 3 wheeler but the the tripples look like Tricky Dicks. This guy most likely wont get rich with this piece (even if it is identified) but it looks like a cool flashback to 3 wheel race history. Lets try to identify it....guys? I am guessing a privateers ride but could it be more? This is the kind of stuff I love!

trx250r rear fender
350x front fender
kawasaki caliper
honda plastic tank
The suspension seem to be from a Yamaha dirt bike like the old IT and YZ
The mount look similar to the 200x bolt pattern
I'm probably wrong cause I don't have real interrest in thoses model.....but it's maybe a home made trike based on a dirtbike?

What I see is,,Def Yamaha IT 200 or possibly 175 frame ,shock, and swingarm,TRX 250R oe rear plastic,350X fr fender,Clarke plastic 83-5 200X tank and petcock,Franks or Tricky Dicks forks,,I think Franks, axle?? Pin drive,,no clue,,nice finish and strength. Hubs,4/110,Front Kawasaki caliper on the rear. Def NOT a Cagiva. Cool piece??! Thanx for sharing.

Even though it's not a cagiva 3 wheeler, it's still worth going after and making an offer on. It may be a one off, or a few others could have been made, but this is the first I've seen. It may be like owning a Nicholson 500x one day, when more is found out about it.
Try and get the whole fleet of wheelers while your at it.

The first thing I thought when I saw that shock was that it was an IT, like the other guys said. I had an 81 or 82, I think, IT175 and I'm almost positive it had the chain on the right side of the motor. The axle in his pics have the drive on the left. I'm not positive all IT's had the chain on the right, but I'm fairly certain mine did.
Very interesting no matter how you slice it. Those triples look cool.

175's were right side drive,,,I Think 200 were left,,

Yeah,,kind of a shame. He busts his azz pulling parts, trying to treat people fair,,,hopefully! And only to realize,,,he better take what he can get.. Still has value,,,to us ! lol

You would think if he is planning on it being "valuable" down the road, he wouldn't be letting it set outside.

Well, obviously not a Cagiva. The triples don't look like any we would have done. Typically, most Tricky Dick triples had a bolt on each side of the fork. Until the design we used on the Cagiva's triples. Plus, there's no way my Dad would have let those go out with the different spacing between the fork clamp bolts. Looks like they drilled them by hand.

Hmm... Looks like it'd be a fun... "Restoration"? Can that thing even be a restoration even though it was never (assuming) sold as one piece?

let the guy know what it is not, tell him it is a bunch of put together stuff and you would like it. let him know it will be kept inside and possiably fixed up. Don't be a jerk about it or offened him in any way, but if he had any real plans for it, it would not be where it is. If he is someone you know maybe you have something to trade for it even. I would for sure try and get it though. Thanks for posting pics and great find.
When i first saw the pics, i thought european Conversion.........
Not sure where the thought came from, but i may dig through some stuff this afternoon and see if anything kicks my brain in gear.
Second thought
It seems to be very cobbled together. Most likely wasnt built by someone reputable, was thrown together in a huge hurry or has seen many levels of changes. Which just kickstarted my hard head!
Be back!

The frame looks grafted together with 2 frames.
The triples, although not Tricky Dicks, do appear to have been machined and not hand drilled IMHO........
The shock does look IT-ish.
The inside grommet grooves in that tank are something I have not seen. Does a 200X tank mount up that way? The 350X tank groove is straight back, not angled like in that one photo. Shrouds are odd also.
The swinger does seem Yamah-ish and that axle looks strong. I wonder what it took to break the ear off that Billet (if it is billet) hub on the left?
The forward shock ears are welded on the frame and look freshly painted; And the resi hose appears to come straight off the top.
That axle almost looks like aluminum? Or am I nuts? It is keyed on the left side, the key itself is steel and corroded and the axle seems to use those industrial face mounted flanged pillow block bearings with an eccentric locking collar and then a set screw to hold it in that position.
Odd little bugger, probably homemade/privateer but someone made that axle up for sure......

Well, I've teamed up with the owner of the shop/yard building and running an online side for it selling parts, trikes, quads, bikes, and things of that assort.
I've also been told that this thing is mine for what he has in it, which he has wrote down.
Tomorrow is my first day, and I'll have a list of what all's available posted up soon, 3WW gets first dibs at any and all trike stuff of course!
Thought I'd give a little update and revive a possibly relative thread again. Anyone have an engine laying around that might bolt up? And hubs?

Never understood why people leave rigs outside in the elements.
I love it been thinking of a it175 conversion since I will never be able to afford a franks or tiger this has really got me thinking the swing arm really looks like an 81-82 it to me and the frame has been fixed or 2 spliced to getter under the tank

Agreed, would you leave your kids out in the elements??
If you can't afford to bring them inside and give them proper care..you shouldn't own them!
That goes for kids and trikes!!!
im not 100% sure this is not a xr200 conversion with the shock relocated

I know this is an OLD post... but does anyone know what happened to it? Is it on old 80's dirt bike conversion? What about a "Dirt E Werks" conversion that was out of Flagstaff, AZ?
So cool! Why cant I find anything like that around here!?
Because up here in the boring northeast, Most likely not a lot of people bought Trikes because "they are too dangerous and kill people" ... lol It seems like all the fun things are down south or mid west to west coast!!!
