hey all i just wanted to know the average amount of peeps that ride there 250 2 strokes and other 2 strokes in the winter time. both liquid cooled and air cooled. do you road ride them in the winter or take them off road also.
i took the tri z out yesterday and it was only 18 F out it didnt seem to make it run any different but lol i bet the thermastat (spelling??) on the thing never even opened because it was so cold out im prolly not going to ride mine this winter i might take it out a couple of times but its going to be put in my basement so i can do a couple of mods to it. pipes, reeds, head work, jetting issues with new flat side yah know how it is.

We ride 2 2-strokes during the winter. 1 air cooled and 1 liquid cooled.

i ride my liquid cooled r any time of the year , any place i can ,road ,trails railroad tracks...dont matter the terrain or climate...cant see where it would hurt any machine to ride it in the winter, as long as you do your routine maintenance..and dress accordingly for the weather....good luck

I ride mine year around. About the coldest I ride in though is in the low 30's or high 20's. And its only like that for a couple days usually.

Winter is the best time to ride! Where I live, it opens up tons of trails that you literally can't get to the rest of the year. I'm talking about all the frozen back water of the Mississippi River and all the islands. The cold weather definitely makes a difference for your jetting though and makes the motor more powerfull once you jet up. I've been riding in temps as low as -3F, but you can't go very long without coming in to warm up.

Ive rode my tri-z in the winter, and about the only thing you have to worry about is the jetting. You see, colder air is more dense, thus your engine is sucking in more air to your fixed carb jetting, which would make it run leaner. On the other hand though if you are criusin at a steady pace the colder air on the radiators may make your engine run rich, just put a little piece of cardboard in front of your radiators to solve this problem. I have also rode my blaster in the winter (air cooled), but my jetting was off just a hair and I put a hole through the piston. It is a lot safer to ride a liquid cooled in the winter, than it is an air cooled (can still be done, but you have to watch your jetting more closely).

I block off one radiator and ride!!! i love the winter riding. just make sure you have a good antifreeze mix cause even running a radiator will freeze up without enough antifreeze,,,, oh by the way trikes don't have thermostats,,,, free flow all the time,,,,

250rmad, you are incorrect. The tri-z was the only threewheeler with a thermostat. They often go bad so I scraped mine (now it is free flow all the time).

make sure you have good tires. when i had my 86 250r i went riding in the snow. all i had was wore out stock tires. the tires would never get traction and it was easy to overheat the motor with all the tire spin. yes even though it was freezing outside. i did nothing to the jetting. it was jetted for the beach and the snow was at 5,000 feet.

I live in Wisconsin and ride my Tri-Z in winter. It's awesome.

I've also got an IT 490 bike (2 stroke air cooled) that I ride in winter too, but not as often as the Z.

I ride all year - there's nothing like giant white rooster tails!

All year round.
In the desert, winter temps are in the 60's-70's. Perfect riding weather. I do wish I could get on a frozen lake or a huge patch of ice though. Ridiing in snow is tooooooo much fun.

Wow thats Cool to see this old thread !! I ride in the winter some, not on trails for the most part, but I do love ice racing, weather permitting. I raced the past 2 years in the local towns ice races, last year it was 3 above and I could'nt hardly start my R ,my Big Red was toting a few 2 strokers around to get us started, it was so cold!! Jetting was the obvious issue, but the year before I spanked the quads in the 250 open class!! But I do love my ice racing!!!!:w00t:

I prefer riding on the ice over almost everything, because nothing gets dirty.

I live 5 miles from the Canadian Border in Northern New York. We get nasty winters with -20 below sometimes. My friends and I ride our frozen creeks of the St. Lawrence River as much as we can. 60 mile round trips are a weekend blast. I love to ride my TriZ on the creeks ! Put on studded tires for ice or nice set of sand paddles for fresh powder. She runs better to me when it is about 30-40 out.

Dress Warm !!

i ride my 83 and 85 in the winter, on and off road!! going to start keeping a piece of card board with me for the liquid one so i can cover one or 2 of the rad(s) when i feel it needs it...mainly to warm it up. Last year i only had the 83, but it was a blast!!! alot easier to do 360's unexpectedly!! the bear claws last year worked pretty damn good!!!!

Gass ONN and stay warm!!!

me and digity x do a lot of riding on the winter, especially lake riding. winter time opens alot of trails around our area and the lake makes access to alot of trails that would otherwise be closed during the spring and summer. we can go all day long out on the lake, making pitstops at different bar and grills along the way. i ride my blaster he has a sweet q-racer, as long as you jet properly you should be fine. i am gonna be taking my t3 out for its maiden voyage on the lake this winter, gonna have to stud the tires though. i could spin allday long in the same spot if i didnt stud them. i usually do both fronts and backs, helps with the steering on the ice. as far as tempurature, we have ridden when its 30 out and we have ridden when its 20 below out, bikes run great everytime no matter how cold. like i said, as long as your jetted correctly, no probs. winter time offers up some of the best riding of the year.
