Zinger motor swap idea.... this should be INTERESTING

Hey guys. Some of you may know that I picked up an old Tri Zinger with no piston/rings for a pretty good price. I was thinking to myself; "How could I possibly make this an insane death trap". Well, I got an idea. a 1981 Yamaha YZ125 motor. My plan is to remove the drive setup (engine and rear axle) and weld up some swingarm mounts. I would use the swinger off a Yamaha Blaster. I would then weld up some motor mounts for the YZ125 motor. I am worried about a location for a radiator on this little trike of doom. I'm thinking maybe side of the frame? Anyway, I'll get the little guy home from storage and start stripping it down and see what I have to work with. I am wondering if anyone here would actually be interested in this build, if so I might go through with it. My trusty 90 amp flux core Harbor Freight $100 welder and a bunch of old scrap steel will be what I have to work with :lol:.

It's been so long ago that I don't really remember which site it was on, but someone had created a suspension zinger and had pics of it. As far as engines go, that's another story.

Good luck with that. Putting a standard configuration engine with more than twice the displacement into a laydown chassis? I think you're going to run out of room to work with a lot faster than you think.

personally i'm not a fan of hacking, but that's me. sounds like it's going to be some work doing it. i am watching though to see what you come up with. should be quite fun/dangerous. :lol: :beer

not sure how big of rad your dealing with, but how about mounting the rad behind the number plate? use some flexible hoses, cut out the center of the number plate (kind makes me cringe saying that, unless you use a PW50 front fender :lol: ), glue in some screen mesh or something on the backside of the plate for protection, then mount the rad behind that. also not sure, but that seems like quite a bit of motor for the little frame, might need a couple gussets added to the original part of the frame you use. might want to seriously think about a BW80 fork swap too if you do it. :beer

If you have the original '81 YZ rad/number plate setup that would actally look pretty cool.

going to be some real work, maybe consider ripping something else apart instead lol

if you follow through you could always mount the red up on the front trip's like the tecates did. The swinger and stuffing a 125 in there will be a task!

Glad to see I have some interest! I was thinking with the blaster swingarm i could raise the Zinger enough to make a drop cradle for the motor. I suck at measuring but otherwise i am pretty creative and a good problem solver so i may just tackle the project with no plans and wing it. We'll see!

Have decided to go air cooled and use a Yamaha blaster motor. This should allow me to not need the radiator. My current worry is the width of a blaster axle. Would it ever turn?!

use a chinesse 110 axle air cool is a must in a small frame unless you put the rads on the tripples and you may have to drop the bottom of the frame down like i did with my quad

There is no bottom of the frame. All I can picture is a Zinger with all the tires off the ground balancing on a Blaster engine.

I'd have to build a cradle with tube steel that would meet up to the frame to house the engine.... Ground clearance is the main issue here. This would be so much easier if I had a ATC 70 with a chain drive pre-installed :wondering

cut the head tube off wrap some steel around the motor and weld it back together

One of my friends is giving me the head, cylinder, and internals from his chinese 50cc quad that appear to be a match to the Zinger's parts, or close enough to work. Looks like for atleast a while the project ain't happenen.
