Not sure about modified cdi, if you have the 86 stator you can use a performance cdi for a 400ex, thats what I use. It's got more aggressive advance, and a rev limiter for insurance.

What's the differences between the 85 n 86?

Not sure why the 85 stator won't work with the 400ex cdi, just what I was told, so I use 86 stators.
