so on my last ride my 350x developed a knock/tap kind of noise...its actully hard to describe...but i believe it to be a rod bearing...and im just curious if its possable to replace the rod/bearings with out splitting the cases...and with my luck im sure i already know the answer to this question:rolleyes:

Tear it down, they are very simple motors.....
Or snag up the next 4-800$ crate motor, they always come around.

i can probly try on friday...i dont know how good of quality i will get with a camera phone...it started out quiet and gradually got louder while riding it and it locked up on me...but i pushed hard enough on the kicker and it unlocked...it also was running perfect and makeing great compression other then the noise...the oil pump seems to be pumping good up to the cam and valves

I've seen both too tight exhaust valves and decompression cables improperly adjusted make very loud ticking noise.......

im sure it could...but it started doing this while riding it.. and i took the valve covers off and they are fine...i mean its original 1985 rod, rod bearings and crack bearings...do crack bearing cause a knock when they go bad?

is your cam chain slack? the tensioners can go on these machines, or the chain just gets warn, it makes a tapping sound as the chain taps against the inside of the engine, it can be a very common problem;

it could very well be...it is still in the trailer with the 250r, bigred, coolers and generator from the last ride back on dec 2nd...i have a friends warrior in pieces in my shed we are putting back together...i should have that out tomorrow and then i can see whats going on with it

ok got the bike broke down tonight and just as a i thought the rod bearing is toast...at that point i was ready to sell it off...but my buddie says no lets split the cases and fix it...well i now have broken teeth on the clutch basket gear...i think im in way over my head on this :rolleyes:

You are still ahead. When the rod bearing went out on my 200x it went with a bang! It started to seize up came loose then decided to let go taking out the left center case half, cylinder, rod, piston, and the crank. Now it a good time to put in a stroker crank..just sayin.

ouch...well so far the only damage it did was the bearing itself...the teeth on the gear is my fault...i just know im going to screw this up so bad and that i should probly just sell or trade it now before i make it worse

That shouldn't be too bad. Once you get the crank out have someone press it apart put a new guts in it with new rod and you should be set. I'm sure they will inspect the crank bearings when it's apart too. Probably put cam chain guides and a new chain in since it's all apart. The damaged teeth on the clutch was probably due to removal?? Ya jammed a screw driver in the teeth to take the nut off?? Next time use pre-1982 penny to hold the clutch in place. I'm Assuming this is what happened, if not forget what I said. There is a link on this forum somewhere for the 350x shop manual if you don't have one, they make dissassembly and reassembly of these engines very easy.

Pre 1982 pennies are 95% copper and 5% zinc which in turn equals soft and less likely to break the hardend gear. 1982 to present pennies are almost the direct opposite.....97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. That in turn makes them a harder which may chip the gear. Save your pre 82 pennies!!

I was able to get mine off with a good impact gun. I did the same thing to the clutch basket trying to use a screwdriver to hold it, however that was on my 400ex. I have never had to split the case on my 350
