Hi,
Seems to be not uncommon.
Is your shifter loose on the shaft, pinchbolt wise?
There is a shift drum stopper mounting bolt that can come loose on those.
I had one actually break the mount casting but apparently they rode it
like that for a while.
The dipstick looked like it had been hit with a grinder right near the hashmarks.
Anyway, you can try adjusting the clutch.
and the next step, if necessary, is to pull the clutch side cover, actually a normal maint issue
so the gaskets are readily avail if you need one. and look at the shift drum stopper bolt.
Drain the oil (i didn't) and lay the trike completely on it's side.
some of those parts and linkages simply come off and kinda confusing to put them back if the fall off.
Best to try the search key too and get a bunch of suggestions, but here are some pix
Hopefully the clutch adjuster on the outside needs attention.
2nd pic is the bolt in question and 3rd is where my new 125m bolt had broken the casting.which no one has ever seen
so you'll be ok.
5th pic, upper left in the picture, is the bolt and drum stopper lever a couple inches long

Make sure the sub-transmission isn't hung up between high and low range.

EXcellent suggestion ebg.
I completely forgot about that.
Been a while since I've been on a hi lo and yes, they do get slipped out / between hi and lo.
Tree branch or root, shoelaces.
Thanks.

I love the ability to switch back and forth depending on what I need to do - low range to tow trailers and big-ass BBQ pits around, high range to fly around on the trails, back to low range when my kid rides it.

aaarrrrg! that's the 2nd time it let me write and then say I'm not logged in.
and now I gotta run into town.
where was I?
I have a few with frozen hi lo levers and one with no gears in the hi lo but it works for some reason.
Slipped out of or not all the way into hi lo usually sounds like the noise we hear when we don't wait long enough for the gears to spin down in a regular car or truck clutch.
Will it shift up and down with then engine off and rocking it back and forth?
with some mystery positions in between?
Best case is an external adjustment, and worst is a bent shift drum stopper for under 10 bucks and available almost everywhere,
or
simply a loose bolt holding the stopper.
I posted my symptoms and that what I was told.
Search key with something like '125m shift problems' should pull it all up.

Sometimes these things don't want to go into gear. I had an 84 with the issue. You can take the right side cover off to get a good look at how the mechanism works. Where are you at in IL? If you end up needing some of the high/low stuff I think I may still have some parts left when I fixed mine. I bought a complete high/low setup but only needed 1 gear
