So I took my 87 200x to the local riding place with a few moster 4 wheelers (pic below). I was able to get through most spots but definately struggled through quite a few of the bigger, deeper mud holes. I have 20" Dunlop KT577s with stock rims on the back and I am thinking if I upgraded the rear tires it might help a bit. The main problem was ground clearance. What tire/rim combination should I be looking at? Will the stock 400ex rims bolt on? Worst case I was thinking about an additional pair of stock rims and go back to a 22" more aggressive tire.

Awesome for you! ...I KNOW this is not on most peoples minds!...But ,with my love and SICKNESS for these,,,it makes me sick to see an 87 X being treated like that. I KNOW I am wrong!! It's YOUR machine, you can do as you wish,,they're made to be ridden......etc..etc... But it still kills me!! Keep enjoying her! I just actually read your post.. 400EX rears bolt right on..and yes,,you want some agressive mud tires,,22's,,to keep tearing her up,,I mean to get thru the mud as good as or better than those big pigs. Like you said,,your limit is always being bottomed out. As long as you have great traction and are not bottomed out,you will usually keep going.

if you fo with anythign bigger then a 22 inch tire( cbc gators, maxis surtracs, mudlites, etc) you will want to drop a tyooth on the front sprocket since the clutch and power arent exactly up to par on the 2nd gen 200x's but i have also done fairly well with razr 2's in the mud on the quads.

I guess it's a good thing I didn't post the pic from the completion of the ride as the above pic was taken about 1 hour into it... :) I do see your point but I hope you also see mine in that I live in South Louisiana and if I want to ride my 3 wheeler, I am going to have to ride it in the mud! And, I want to ride a 3 wheeler, not some jacked up, non manuvering 4 wheeler. Trust me, I went AROUND the majority of the big mud holes and STILL got stuck but it was only because of ground clearance. I simply want to put the best available equipment on my X so I can at least go riding with my buddies on their big pigs. Although she is muddy in the above pic, she will be washed, oil changed, lubed and back to museum quality by next weekend.

I would rather be stuck in the mud with my X than be seen riding that purple/yellow thing in the background! :p

Well, I am in LSU country so that would be a custom LSU paint job on it complete with the eye of the tiger on the tank!
Anyway, back to the original topic...
Anyone have 22x11x9 Mudlites on factory 200X rims? I am hoping to pick up a couple of cheap rims on ebay and mount some aggressive mud tires and keep the 20" dunlops mounted for when I am not trying to keep up in the mud pits.

I have some ITP mudlite SP's 20x10x9 on 400ex rims, 4x110, bolt right on, and are GREAT in the mud and look ok on a threewheeler, IMO. Flat, square profile that I like. They probably make a 22 with the same tread pattern. You can buy them cheaply from that place in Nebraska if you keep a sharp eye.

I stumbled upon a local craiglist add for a set of new stock 08 trx250ex rims and stock 22x10x9 tires for $100. These looks to be 9x9 4/110 rims that should bolt right on my 200x. They also appear to be the same as the trx400ex rims. Does anyone know if the offset of these rims are the same as my 200x rims? Just wondering if I will lose or gain width with this set of wheels. I may try out the stock 22's before buying mudlite's.

i would definitely go for 22 Mudlites. they r a great mud tire and they are not that heavy so even a smaller motor like the 200X will have no problem with them. stock 22's for a 250ex i think r absolutely worthless for heavy/deep mud. i wouldn't even waste my time. go with mudlites.
and also i have to say i agree with atc007 in post #2......... cuz i love the '87's
you know i am reading and reading, and everyone is stating the same thing, get bigger taller heavier mud tires for an already underpowered lightweight machine. And I recal, with HUNDREDS of photo's to back it up, me, on a measily little 200s, going through a 3ft mudhole repeatedly, and only once getting stuck due to stalling and sinking.....alot, and what looked like me in a poor recreation of the karate kid movie...and this was all done on Kenda corpion extremely lightweight knobby tires. the trick is not as much the tire as it is the knowledge of the rider. the biggest truck in the world can still easily get stuck if the vehicle has an o-p-e-r-a-t-o-r error.knobby tires, though very flexible and shift alot in the side walls, provived INCREDIBLE traction and self cleaning capabilities, AND under rpms, they expand in diameter providing more ground clearance. I would take a set of knobby tires, from any manufacturer, over any of the other tires produced for mud, and turf tamers over any other race tire produced.
Here are a couple teasers, and a shot from a nitwit on a Recon 420 with a liftkit who thought he could go where the Honda trike did...lol

yes i know its a bomber, it was picked up after sitting almost 22 years...left just like you see it. I put tires on it, changed fluids, and enjoyed it. was too far gone to be restored, and from the 150 i paid for it, was worth alot more in a summers memories before finding its new home to a guy in Buffalo who had 3 of these he needed parts for.
