I have a old 200x that I got when I was 12 years old for christmas. It's been sitting in the barn for over 18 years. I got it out the other day and cleaned it up and decided to go through it to get it running. I bought a nos cobra exhaust awhile ago waiting for the build. I ordered a 30mm mikuni carb and was wondering on oher mods I could do to it. I want to do a 12:1 wiseco piston, port job, valve job, new valve springs, retainers, mid to top grind web cam, and open up the intake to fit the 30mm carb. I already opened up the motor and found that every thing looked like brand new inside. I also got alot of the frame stuff ready to go to the powder coater. I need sugestions on the motor because I never messed with a 200x motor at all. I got alot of fond memories on this machine and can't wait to get it running better than new.

Your fine, it's an easy motor to work on.... Such easy valves to adjust, so many upgrades. I love the 86/87X.
12:1, you haven't had it out for years, are you prepared to run fresh race gas consistently? It's hard to keep up with.
IDT if it's worth the trouble, I have done it......Wish I didn't. Too many trikes to keep fresh.
Get a nice 10.25 or 10.50:1 piston, a nice cam, the exhaust and carb mods and take the lid off the air box.
Just my opinion.

Will the middle cam web cam offers work with the 10.25 compression. All my trikes and 4 wheelers get a diet of 110 octane race gas only.

While you and DC are both on the right trail. there's a Good chance Mickey Dunlap will see this now : ) He MIGHT know of a couple things to coax a little more out of her. Right at the very end,,Powroll/He,,had those things figured out quite nicely. Normally here,I'm saying leave it stock, enjoy it the way it is. But if you're already feeding Race gas to your stable,,lets see what this thing can do!!! I am a big fan of port, head work. I think I read somewhere they don't do a lot of porting to these? I know 350x and old style 200x,,but I have not stretched one of these all the way out ,,,,yet. I'd be willing to try : )

I mock the 30mm carb on the intake today and it fits good just needs the intake enlarged a little and it will flow good. The air box hose had to be heated and stretched a little also. http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz40/stroberts22/IMG_1505.jpg

What is the carb off of? I put a 24 on my TTR (stock so I think) and it did wonders. I may like a larger one on the "X"!
stroberts22
01-31-2012, 10:41 PM
The legend Mickey Dunlap is doing the port work and valve job. I think he just used stock size valves. The carb is advertised as a 30mm but I think they measure it different because it is bigger than stock but not by much. Mickey flowed the carb and said it didn't flow as good as the old school powroll carbs but will work alright for me.

I've been trying to work on my tank. It has heavy rust in it. I got a gallon of metal rescue and put it in last week and I got back from work last night and checked it. You can see the line that the metal rescue was filled up to in the tank. I turned the tank and started working on the other half. The part where the metal recue covered looks like brand new. This stuff works.

Head is back for getting ported. I dropped the tank and other parts at the powder coaters. I never had a tank that I could powder coat because they had dents in them and had bondo in them. I hope it turns out good. Cylinder is bored for the piston. I almost ready to put the motor back together. Do I need to replace the timing chain and guides? The old one is a did chain and shows no wear. What other parts I need to replace in the motor?

If your chain is a recently replaced DID,and was tight. It's fine. If the cam and rockers look good, leave them to. Are you staying with a stock cam? You'll love this little sucker when she's all buttoned up!

It occured to me that when I wrote that I never received any reply from Cosmicquads it may have appeared that i was upset with them or throwing a dig at them. This was not my intention. My intension was to say his seat is SWEET and I soooo want one, that's all. I know they are busy over there (just look at their website as proof) and my emails probably got shuffled around and lost...... trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro happens and I'm not the be all end all of customers. I was putting together the bottom end today and the gasket set I got for it doesn't fit. The center case gasket doesn't go around were the kick starter is. I guess it's for a trx without a kickstarter. Has anyone else had this problem?
oscarmayer
03-18-2012, 12:13 PM
they sent you a 200s gasket kit i bet. I had the same issue with my 200x when i redid the engine. I bet you don't have the side kicker gasket either. If the kicker gasket is there, then it was a goof up from the factory.

I got the seat in the other day from Cosmic Quads and it has inspired me to get the rest of it done. I got the motor together and installed but I still like some seals on the right cover, the seal kit I got didn't have the ones I needed. I tried to reuse a old trottle cable I had but it is to long and I ordered a new clutch and throttle cable for a 200x. The set of tires for the 84 250r is is backordered and they are waiting on them to ship all the tires together. I ordered ITP GNCC Holeshots for the 200X. Still like alot of little pieces most of them are ordered and waiting on them to show up. This thing is screaming for some oem fenders but maiers are going to have to do. This build has been easy. I was afraid that I ragged it out to much when I was younger but it is in good condition considering the abuse it has gone through. http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz40/stroberts22/IMG_1625.jpghttp://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz40/stroberts22/IMG_1623.jpghttp://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz40/stroberts22/IMG_1624.jpghttp://i811.photobucket.com/albums/zz40/stroberts22/IMG_1626.jpg

Looks Great!Don't worry about the Maier fenders. It will look good with the decals installed.Plus if you are going to ride it originals are just to costly to ruin.Only suggestion with the Maier is make a support to hold them out from the exhaust.Mine started to sag after awhile.143330

03-24-2012, 07:29 PM
You can make the OEM support work, but have to drill the fenders. If and when I do this, I just use SS hardware; Thats about the best I can do.
I'd never feel bad about using MAIER; OEM even used is usually priced outrageously and I'd rather spend the money on the motor or some other part of the rebuild......
I usually don't even run stickers because I ruin them with the pressure washer
Coming together nicely :beer

I had the same problem with the aftermarket seal kit, even though it says it works for the 86/87 200x I think it is probably only for the trx200sx witch does not have the kickstarter or the comp. release lever on the rightside cover.hammer hammer

Hooked up the Cobra exhaust this afternoon and I don't see why these exhaust have a bad wrap. It sounds like a 450! I can't wait to ride it. You can stab the throttle wide open without any hesitation. Mickey done a great port job on it and everything seems to be working well together. I appreciate his help with the motor. Still trying to get the clutch figure out on the mugen. I've been working on this in the spare time. I threw some jets at it today and got rid of the choke like Mickey suggested and the thing is running even better. It's going to be great on the trails because it's gearing in 1st gear. I went up on the counter sprocket to a 14 but it still creeps slow in 1st.

It's got a mikuni 30mm pit bike carb on it. It had a 100 main and I went up to 110 and the pilot was a 20 and I went up to a 25 and the needle is in the richest position. Seems like it is pretty close to perfect the way it runs. It is real rideable without any hesitation. I rode it all day today. I already got it broke in and not even done with it. I weigh 180lb and I went up 1 tooth on the front to a 14 to compensate for the 20" tires instead of 22". The rear is stock 38 tooth. The mods on it are port and valve job by Mickey Dunlap at 4 Stroke Tech. He also port matched my intake for the bigger mikuni carb. 12 to 1 piston was installed during a complete rebuild right down to spliting the cases. A Barnett clutch was installed. The carb is a 30mm mikuni that is found on many pit bikes. I rejetted it for the 200x and works real well. The air box inlet had to be heated with a hair dryer and stretched for the big carb to fit but other than that it bolted up to the stock intake. It has a K&N air filter and a cobra exhaust. The rear shock was rebuilt by Shock Therapy and all the adjustments still work on it. I rebuilt the front forks. All the master cylinders have already been rebuilt but still liking the calipers rebuilt. It has alot of factory oem parts that I replaced that are still available. I was surprised on how cheap it was to build this 200x unlike a 250r. All the parts are easy to find and economical priced.

I put the 200x to the test this weekend at trikefest. I took a basically stock setup trike to the motocross track and it kicked butt. It came in 1st place in mx. The drag racing was a different story. I went up against a poweroll 6mil stroker in the semi final and came up a little short. He easily won in the final. I didn't get a chance to race the loser of the final round to settle 2nd place so I was 3rd. I think I could of beat him. It ran really strong all weekend and was good on the trails. I hit double jumps on the mx course with no problem. I'm really proud of how it done.
