Just picked this thing up. Boot is ripped and blowing grease everywhere. I asked this in another general question when I got it but I thought it was better to make it's own post. Can someone tell me the EASIEST way to replace this without messing anything up? I heard to cut the old boot off and then I should be able to pry the shaft back toward the rear end from where it enters the motor and slide a new one on. I also heard that if I pull it apart it's extremely difficult to get it back together and I risk dropping a washer and ruining first gear. If anyone has any pics or tips I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

If that boot was gone, your rear end will die in time......

For the time being, yes you can just slide the d-shaft back and replace it; Although the clamps may be discontinued.

Just never pull the output shaft with the 3 allen bolts.

You don't need pics, you need a shop manual.

X2 on all DC said!! DO NOT EVER PULL THAT Shaft out! Unless you are already splitting the motor. The dirt has eaten away at your pinion seal. If the bikes worth anything.. Pull the rear,,replace the seals, inspect and probably replace bearings,,and replacing that boot will be cake!

well i dont plan on trail riding it only using it around the house unless i just turn around and sell it so i'm not putting money into it i wont get back. there is a shop manual on the site here but i honestly couldn't find a section that helped me out. as for the clamps i will just reuse them. so that said, without unbolting anything i should be able to cut the old boot off and slide the shaft back enough to slide a new boot on?

the easiest way is to remove the swingarm. Unbolt the shock and remove the rear brake cables. Use a 17mm allen wrench to take the swingarm pivot bolt out and then you can remove the swingarm. More than likely the pinion gear seal is blown in the final drive housing which will cause the gear oil from the final drive to be "flung" out. Installing a new boot will only fix half of the problem. you need to replace the seals and/or bearings in the final drive to solve all of your problems... Quadboss makes a nice rebuild kit.
