Question about Yamaha 225DX clutch parts..

I'm looking at buying my 1st Yamaha trike locally, I really like the 225DX/DR. This machine has alot of the same characteristics as my favorite Honda, the 250SX.

Anyway the seller says the clutch is slipping and that adjustment should fix that, he just doesn't have the time!! You know typically CL crap..so I am counting a clutch job into my price offer.

I have found many sources of replacement clutch disc, but am having a hard time finding replacement shoes for the centrifugal clutch.

Can these replacement shoes be found anymore or will I have to settle for a used replacement centrifugal clutch from ebay??

I don't think anyones stepped up to the plate making new shoes. The drum is usually more shot than the shoes. You'll find deep circular grooves cut right into the drum. You may very well get out of it for $40 w gasket,if it's just the standard clutch plate job. Might be WAY more. If you end up needing the centrifugal,,get a set with little to no wear in the drum! All of yammies 200's and 225's were similiar. Not saying anything WILL exchange,but their is a chance. When and if you get that far.

Can you 'clean up' the drum with some medium emery cloth to rough up the surface and brake the glazing to help??

the auto 200's from honda have a similar centrifugal clutch set up. i have seen a drum from a member on this board have the "grooves" turned out of it. i dont know how it works or wether it changes stall speed but it might be worth a try.

i would try a new clutch kit, steel, fiber, and springs first. that is likely to fix the problem.

No,I'm talking 1/8 grooves! Junk! That's usually what you find by the time it starts slipping.Once in a while,,they scorched it hot enough to where you don't have to replace the drum,but not too often.

im well aware of what he's likely to find..... im wondering if the drum can be turned on a lathe to new condition without affecting the operation of it... im sure there would be some sort of limit, and yeah my guess is grooves 1/8th in. deep may be to much. buying any used drum off ebay is a gamble, maybe you'll find one nos but i doubt it.. and if you do it probably wont be cheap....

Yeah I thought about that, but I'm betting there isn't enough tolerance to cut the drum..also if there are no replacement shoes for the clutch then there isn't much point to it.

Nope,not even close,unless a place made oversize aftermarket shoes. Then the drum wouldn't be near thick enough to heat sink the heat away.

Your best bet is to ebay it for a better set, as the drum wears with the centrifugal. I don't have a spare anymore as I sold the last one, but you might get lucky and all it really needs is an adjustment. I would take a look at the shop manual and check for clutch adjustment setting, and do it when you go to look at it. If that resolves the problem great if not then you have a better way to talk down price. If you buy it I think you'll love it good luck

that seller is an idiot,look at some of his prices.when he first posted his stuff he wanted triple for it.

that's just the drum anyways, more than likely you'll need the centrifugal clutch itself.

they still make them. i could have ordered new shoes from my yammy dealer for $250, almost had a heartattack that day. so i took a propane torch and headed those springs that close the shoes making them weaker. worked like a charm after that, still working almost a year later

And there's a fair chance all you will need is fibers,springs and a gasket : )
