well if it ran fine, but didnt have enough power to light the lights, then i think it would of stalled out of it was the stator, although, im not positive here, check all your ground wires, and other wires where they connect and the wire itself, make sure all connections are tight and clean, if it still does this, then i would say its a weak stator
but wait, now that i think about it, a stator has 2 seperate parts i think, a lighting coil, and a ignition one, so maybe just the lighting one is going bad
i might be wrong, i have never really worked on 350x's so i'm going by my 250R experiences

My lights were giving me trouble when I first got my X and it ended up being a loose ground wire.

well my friend came over today to check it out and he said that its the regulator, because it was getting pretty hot, couls that be the problem? its number 7 btw

dam this would be easier if my scanner was working !
84ATC250R is right. like his 250r experiance says, the 350x ( like most if not all ) has a lighting coil.
and i like Dynofoxs idea of the grounding troubles a vintage trike can give.
i reckon all i can add is if it ain't a gounding problem,, is
resistance 0.1-1.0 on the lighting coil, trike not running.
a/c rgulator check disconect the lighting switch coupler
start the motor
from the white/yellow and green terminals on the main wire harness side of the coupler voltage should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts.
from experiance myself disconnect all eletrical stuff with motor off, can take out the c.d.i. box in a heartbeat .
i once lost 2 very nice halogen bulbs cuz 1 wire come undone from the stinking regulator + toasted the bulbs,,,, not your problem but wanted to throw that in.

the bike starts great and runs great, so its not the stator right? so its gotta be the regulator right? this sux

i went outside again tonight, turned it on and let it idle for about 10 mins, came back outside and i felt the regulator and it was hot, and the lights were off the whole time, is the regulator supposed to be hot like that??

i hadn't had my x running in about a month now so i went out and fired it up ( only took 3 kicks ). after about 10 minutes of idling w/o the lights on i felt the regulator and it was warm to the touch. i run my x around sevral slow lapps with lights on ( another ten minutes of ride ) and it still felt the same,,, not terrably hot but warm none the less.
for what it's worth,,, john

You must keep in mind that the stator has two circuits, ignition coil and lighting coil. It IS possible for the lighting coil to burn out and the ignition coil to still be ok. I have seen it many times on the early 200x's. You should check out both sides of the stator with an ohmeter, if the lighting coil reads out of spec, that's your problem. Also check for a bad ground if the coils read ok.
