Hello all,
This has been an ongoing project for about two years now. I have built many trikes in the past, mostly 200x's and air fooler 250r's. I think this will be my last 200x as I probably won't be able to top this one. Anyway, it's far from being finished and will likely take another two years but I thought that I would share my progress to date and allow you all to give feedback. This started out with a clean OEM idea but then morphed into a flat tracker. I will periodically update this thread with pics as I complete the stages of the build. A special thanks to Garris Engineering, CT racing, Powroll, shortline10, BKM, xrider, radrandy, Xowner, billygolightly and St. Louis chroming for all of the help with my questions and work.

My local machine shop here in St. Louis did the back-cuts. Their business is called Phase III machine shop. They had never done it before so I gave them some pics from a thread started by Bryan Raffa a couple years back. When I got them back they were perfect. If you want, you can send them to me and I will see if they will do yours as well.
Thanks for the comments!

Good question. I haven't gotten to those two parts yet. As soon as the hub get's back from powdercoating I will do a test fit and let you know. I only got as far as to make sure the hub fits the wheel. I will do some test fitting of the hub to the forks in the next couple of weeks and let you know.

OK, I test fit everything tonight so I can get the hub out for powdercoating. This is the second try since I had my spacers on backwards..LOL Anyway, the 86 hub DOES fit with all of the 1st gen components (axle, spacers, bearings, seals, etc. This issue now is I have to shave a little bit of of the outside edge of the caliper.

Hey all,
I just got the intake, carburetor and stock air box all mounted and test fit. It looks like I am going to have to port match the intake to the head, but I can tell you I now know why guys didn't run the stock air box and just stuck the filter on the end of the carb. What a PITA!!! It seems that my patience won out and I persevered...(a butane torch and increasing larger sockets help as well...LOL) I also had to cut the top e-brake frame mount off and the carburetor finally fit and it is tight! Pics below.

Hi All,
This week I got a bunch of parts in and made some good progress with the build. I put progressive springs in the front forks and also polished the down tubes and fork caps. I also got my hoosier tire mounted to the front rim. I think it looks pretty good. Pics below.

Was there a reason you put the tire on the way you did or is that the direction of rotation.
yaegerb
05-19-2012, 07:48 PM
I was waiting for someone to ask about that...LOL. If you go to Hoosier's website, it states that there tires must be mounted with the serial number towards the infield of the track, so that being said that is how I had to mount it. I didn't like it at first but its growing on me :)
Here is the info from Hoosiertire.com
ROTATIONAL GUIDELINES FOR TIRES WITHOUT DIRECTIONAL ARROWS
Every Hoosier race tire has a four character serial code embossed into ONE sidewall of the tire.
CIRCLE TRACK RACING TIRES: (Includes both dirt and asphalt tires)
Hoosier tires must be mounted with the serial code located toward the infield.
Ohhhh i see that makes sence easier to read i guess.
Pics don't do this bike justice, you really have to see it in person to appreciate it.

What size is that Hoosier? Was looking towards a Kenda Speedracer for the front of mine after I get the 10" wheel, but that Hoosier looks a lot nicer and is probably 2-ply. Speedracers are 4 and 6 ply. One more question, did that tire cost a lot?

Thank you! I wish I had a dollar for everyone that asks me about the Monte. My best buddy was down from Kansas City that weekend helping me get the front end finished up. Its his Monte and he's had it since he was a Junior in highschool and I am pretty sure its an '87. He has done a complete restoration on it and its his daily driver. Its still stock (automatic / 305), numbers matching and is a true head turner.

Hey All,
Got the bearings/stickers, in/on the swinger and got it mounted up. Also got the finishline axle in and I scored an old school universal racing chain tensioner for the 200x/250R. The shock will be back next week along with an HD spring I got off EBAY :naughty:
This weekend I will be re-packing my powroll exhaust and polishing the megaphone. Pics to come. I just got the head pipe back from ceramic coating and it looks sick.
All it needs now is some shoes for the rear-end and I do believe we will have a roller :)

I sandblasted the motor in my cabinet with 120 grit glass bead. Then I hand-sanded the cases with 320 grit. After that I used a light coat of header primer from Summit racing and then I finished it off with a couple coats of PJ1 fast black, also from summit. After that I polished the cooling fins just like from the factory.

Its looks great! Just curious - why didn't you go with powdercoating the cases?

Thanks for the compliments! Like I said in an earlier post, the final stages of this build are what's going to set this bike apart so stay tuned. I got the Powroll decals with my stroker crank that I ordered from them back in 2010. As of now they are discontinued. I will probably give them a call at some point to see if they have made any more :)

Yep, bryan hooked me up tonight with some great pieces and he's finishing up some powdercoating on the last of my parts! Ordered my jets for the carb, got all my brake pieces and got the pipe polished and back on. Also getting some special washers being machined for my rear progressive baja spring. My laundry list is starting to be whittled down. I will have some pics later next week. Thanks again Bryan! You da man!

Hey All,
You asked for pics, so I have been documenting my progress recently. I have been playing some "mad scientist" and have been putting together little bits here and there.
Carburetor Work
Got all of my jets in from Sudco the other day along with my custom Terry cable.
Rear Fenders
Bryan (BKM) let me "borrow" his rear low profile 200x race fenders so I could clean them up and see if they would work.
Front Brakes
Got my front brake master and caliper rebuilt and back on the bike.

Hi All,
I just got my seat back from Tammy at Cosmic Quad's and once again its a winner in my book. She does excellent work! I went ahead and did put the seat on the fenders to see what it is going to look like and I like it! Next step is to finish sanding the fenders and then go and get some 3M white vinyl to cover them with. Pics below.

Hey All,
Over the past couple weeks I got all the controls on. I didn't like the tether and stop switch being so close together, so I placed the tether under the cross bar (Pic 2/3). Also, I didn't like the black cover on my 400EX thumb throttle so I got a moose red anodized one (Pic 4). I then went ahead and put on a PRM rear grab bar on the rear. Also, I just got my Baja progressive shock spring back from BKM. The color is flat white and I think it looks great!

Hello All,
Been a while since I posted progress as its been a busy fall / winter. I got some time recently to make a few updates / changes to the 200x. Around Halloween I got a chance to purchase some SRP low profile fenders and I jumped on it. They need some work and once I save up some pennies I am going to get them completely re-glassed and painted in white to match the front fender and tank shrouds. I also put on my front number plate and numbers (Thanks John and Mike). I also have the carb dialed in as close as I can get it. I will likely be taking it in to my dyno guy this spring. I found a guy here in St. Louis that does Fiberglass boat repair work. I took the fenders over to him to get a quote on having them sanded and reglassed to original condition. Needless to say, it isn't cheap, so I am saving my pennies and should have the fenders complete mid-late summer. They will be painted gloss white to match the shrouds and front fender.

Yes, your correct. The geometry of the 86/87 seemed to change the game; Many improvements.
I've been able to get cams/carbs/extended axles/ different intakes etc etc.
But, I don't have to be worried about internal kickstarter guts. (I still think an engineer got THAT wrong!)
I had an 85 and IMHO, the 86/87 seemed to act like a 350X handling wise.
Not to mention that it's the easiest valve adjustable I have ever seen......

I have heard the handling characteristics are like you said (much like a 350x) and I agree that the kickstarter is much improved on the 86-87. I would like to ring the neck of the engineer that designed that setup on the first gen. I occasionally still have issues with my kicker and the super high compression combo.

The Honda TR200, aka fatcat also has a similar setup with the valves being easy to adjust, they look like the same cylinders

Update and likely the final post to this thread. I just received a PM from Ed Florey. He purchased the flat track 200x back in October. Below is the post and the associated youtube video. The x is finally at home in the herd.
"Hello Brendon it's Ed Florey. Not sure if you remember me but I was the one who bought your 200x last year. Well we just got back from spending the weekend at Pine Lake for round#5 of the NEEDT series. I had to have foot surgery so I was unable to race but my good friend Mat Heinz entered your 200x in the 200/350 lites class. He ended up taking a second place after a good charge for the front. Included below is a video Mat recorded from his helmet. Thought you would be interested in seeing how the 200x compared with the other 3 wheelers. I know Mat was very impressed as well as I. Thanks again."
