so i can trade my 1995 yamaha yz250 with mods(pipe, silencer etc) my bike runs great and all but its really slow, being geared for a mx track.
but i contacted a guy with a 1981 honda 250r its in id say 8/10 shape. plastics are good no cracks just a tear in the seat and no rust in tank. he said it was all original (find hard to believe) but he said it has the original tires on it still. bike fires right up said it takes like 3 or 4 kicks start cold. probly just a spark plug or could just be normal. I was kinda just wondering if it will be powerful and if it would be a descent deal on my part? gonna go look at it later

That's in really nice shape. I would think your YZ250 would blow it away but you say it's slow? The trade depends on if you want a dirt bike or trike I guess.

yeah my yz only does like 60-65. i mean yeah its really powerful lift the wheel in almost every gear. just always wanted a 250r. i know the first gen. are slower and not as long and everything but they are more rare i would think.
the guy wants 850 for it? but it being all stock and original is that a fair? my yz does have some problems like its got a gasket leaking but its not major just a 20 gasket and 20 min to replace. and the pipe has got a hole right by the head and it needs a bracket weled

lol its like 10 minutes from me. but i just dont know if i want to give up my yz and then regret it. im also not good on 2 wheels. i dont go to tacks or anything. i looked at it yesterday and the pics make it look better. he just washed it in the pics so it looks a lot more colorful. im gonna ride and today and maybe do a compression check

i would do a compression check. even in the cold it should start with less kicks then that. but it could be carb/plug. CHECK the seat pan also if its totally rusted out the oem ones are impossible to find unless you go DC plastic

how fast do you want to go ? Your yz should be able to eat this R alive. Your damaged pipe on your yz is robbing you of TONS of power.
If your not good on 2 wheels, you may want to test drive this R first. They are harder to ride than a dirtbike imo.

The 250r is worth more in $ but it is up to you. Your bike you can go to your Yamaha dealer tell them what you need and they hand it to you. A first gen R not so easy. I would do the trade in a heart beat, but that is just me and there is very few areas around me to ride a bike so atv's it is. An 81 is going to have a drum brake and a 3 bolt pattern but new quad hubs fit and then you have a 4x110 pattern. I just got my 82 R done I have an entire thread on the rebuild on airfoolers. I sold my 81 R but that was heavily modded. In stock form they are Ok I guess, but I like my trikes a certain way I guess. If you are looking for something to pound on and destroy pass this R onto someone that can keep it this nice. Sell the bike and buy something you want so you can build it the way you need.

There is no rust what so ever. Tank looks better then me lmao. And my pipe is about to snap in half. Lol. Yeah it starts first kick. He didnt have the nuts to kick it. I looked at now hes bringing it to me

Yeah its all stock. But i want to put and fulk exhaust on it and extend the swing arm. I ride hard so its gonna get a rebuild

dg exhaust makes a killer one for these. i think if you could score a old school bassani that would be the best

Bassani? Are you talking about like super trapp?

no bassani completely different. i would say one of the best exhausts out there. here is mine for a 200x143641

the dg pipe is 100 times easier to get because they are still made i have one they seem to work good never tried anything different but from what i hear the bassani pipe are quite good but a mugen pipe is the best and rarest

I agree with yamaha driver. Mugen will help make it a nasty machine. Currently running a DG on my 82 and very pleased.

Your YZ should eat it alive. It looks really clean, but those are not the stock rear tires.

why not look for a 85/86 250r? i would take a water cooled over an air cooled any day

I really want a 85/86 but they normally run 2000$ and i dont got that cash. Idk if im gonna do it. Just seems stupid cuz of the age difference.

You can always by another YZ. The 1st gen R's are harder to come by. So the choice is obvious get the trike and if you don't like it sell it for something else.

It's all in what you want. Just how many 81 250r's are out there and in that condition? That is one cool retro bike!!!! It does not matter if it is the fastest thing on the planet because it will never be. You should enjoy that bike for what it is and cherry it out, or at least thats what I would do. Yeah a little mod here or there to make the bike your own is great but don't loose track of what it is or what it represents. It represents the beginning of a great racing heritage for Honda in the ATC/ATV market and as the granddaddy of them all will never be upstaged or out done regaurdless of it's speed. Dude buy the bike for the nostalga of what it is not over all speed. If you want crazy fast buy a Raptor 700r....... IMO

If you do get the trike first few thing I would say is change the pipe and up the carb size.

i have owned many dirt bike 1998 kx 125 1990 yz 250 83 it 175 kdx 200 and i thought the same thing when my brother bought his r but man was i wrong he did $250-$300 in work to it and it made a night and day difference it doesn't have the power the yz 250 had but the motor pulls way more all over the power band it s actually a great woods bike. they are a lot different the dirt bikes tho. one bad thing too is you can't just call the local shop and get everything you need like you can with a yz sometimes you have to look hard and dig to find the part you need at a good price then you have to wait on shipping depending where you live

Here is the R I just finished. my other one had the 200x front end on it so I wanted to leave the wide front on this one. I put a real good lower profile Dunlop nobby on the front and it handles pretty good. i had the tire already or I would have ordered a front max.

That is a very nice R. I guess I never ment to imply Don't ever modify one. But I say everything in moderation when you are talking antique bikes, they build stuff that is bigger better faster all the time. Just don't change what the bike is.....
