I finally got the nerve up to take apart my 1986 Honda 250sx carb and clean it. I bought a "Shindy" Carb kit just incase but didn't use any of the parts (Didn't even open it). I sprayed everything down and blew each piece out with the compressor one at a time so I won't forget where they went. I put it back together and the trike idles really high. I tried adjusting the idle screw and nothing. I tried the cable adjustment but it only increases the idle with no way to go in the other direction. I'm thinking that maybe the float is stuck but not sure & tried tapping the bowl with a wrench. I figured I'd ask here before taking the whole thing apart again. Any thoughts?

If the float were stuck it would be pissing gas all over the engine usually..

Probably got an air leak..grab a can or WD40 and spray around the carb with the engine running and see if the idle changes. If it does you should be able to track it down..

If it doesn't, pull the carb and recheck your work..it's a pain in the ass on that machine(just ask Fabio) but it needs to be done!!

I have never had luck just "cleaning" these style carbs (I have 2, ES,and SX) Everytime I pull one apart, the gaskets never survive. I would suggest installing the kit

Ok, I'll try that. I heard so many horror stories about these kits that I didn't want to mess around with it if I didn't have too. I should have replaced the gaskets but they looked fine. I'll try that later. Thanks for the advice & I let you know what happens.

Take the airbox off and make sure the butterfly is closed all the way. When I rebuilt my 350x, the first I time I started it, it was at half throttle. I couldn't figure out what was going on because the carb was fine. I had it held up by my ceiling crane, and the strap I was using had the throttle cable out of its seat at the thumb throttle assembly. Check to make sure the cable is seated in the adjuster up top at the thumb throttle.

Good advice however I never messed with the throttle cable except where it goes into the carb. I'll check everything & shoot some WD40 around the carb soon and see if I can find anything, if not I'm ripping it apart again.

Thanks to all,

FIXED!!! I'm just an ASS!!! I didn't want to strip the darn thing apart again so I took Thorpe advice and started with the top gasket. Still nothing so I removed the black plastic cover for the throttle cable and found the cable was not seated correctly. PERFECT!!! It idles really low and shifts a lot smother. Thanks for the help guys. You all are great!!!
