Well up until today I don't think I ever heard of them. But my neighbor has one, don't remember the condition, and she is giving it to me for free. I need to run my arse iver there tomorrow morning and pick it before she changes her mind. I was just doing some seraching and apperently, the right model is worth some bucks.
I also noticed that maico is still making bikes, and they have a 685cc single cylinder two stroke :naughty: makes 80hp. That is nuts.
I'll put some pics up when I get it. I saw it once, if I remember correctly it has those weird fins and is air-cooled. I believe it is yellow.

They are sought after for sure. I have a maico 440 trike that I sold to Maico( Roger) on here.

That big 685 would make a good power plant for a trike.

^^^^That's what i was thinking. I already emailed Maico international about purchasing just the engine. Sprocket is on the wrong side though.
I was thinking if I couldn't restore this thing, I was gonna make a maico trike and be the first one, guess not LOL. Got any pictures of that beast?

If you were going through the trouble of putting that big ass motor in a trike, the sprocket being on the wrong side wouldnt be hard to combat. Simply move the brake mounting stuff, and flip the axle.

Had a neighbor who suffered the infamous 'Exploding Rear Hub' on an early 80s Maico.

Nope. I had this picture in with a bunch of information I received when I bought my R in 07.

Well got her home today. From what I can tell by running the numbers it's a 1977 MC250, with a M motor, that is a close ratio 250cc. I found a web site called maicoland in socal and spoke with the guy on the phone about the cost of restoring it. Looks like it would be $800-1500 in parts, and a ton of labor. $800 if there isn't anything more wrong than what I can see so far and if the engine runs. I am sure I will find more wrong with it as I go. Probably be closer to the $1500 mark. The 77's were common and not worth as much. The rear hub is already broken, so I would update it to a later hub that is aluminum, not magnesium so not to worry about it letting go. It needs:
tires
rear shocks
front shocks rebuilt
spokes
rear hub
pipe
all new cables and throttle
seat recover
the tank might need some fixin too, looks like there is fiberglass repair done to it, but mostly clean inside.
chain
lot O love
I might just consider selling it for the right price, otherwise it will be on the back burner for a while, and I will just try to collect parts as I go.

Nice deal but not interested. I actually am looking for a quad for one of my sons. Like a 300ex or bigger. I have enough trike projects to last a while. Plus I am more of a honda guy.

Nice score! Free is always good...unless you're talkin' about an STD! LOL. '77 250 watermelon case. Looks like a really good start. Strip off the layers of paint and get it back to original. Parts are fairly plentiful on e-bay. Just keep your eyes peeled.
