when you go riding, what kinda protection do ya use?
Personally I don't use any, but I'm thinking about getting some, I'm thinking boots (I always ride with my caterpillar steel toes), chest protector, and a helmat, what do you guys usually use, and what do you recommend?

A helmet. Chest protector, Steel toe high ankle boots, and gloves. But minimally, a helmet. Any DOT helmet.

I always wear a helmet and goggles. If I'm doing more than just putting around the yard I've got on mx style boots and pants. I usually wear gloves too.

Are the boots comfortable on the ATC? They'd also save my shins when my foot slips off the kick start and it slams in my shin hahah. I wore gloves with the 185s cause it didn't start in one pull so it would rip up my hands.

if I go out riding the trails to race and tear around I wear a helmet, motocross boots, motocross pants and a jersey i just bought a pair of mx gloves and heavy mx socks also. chest protectors fit me real badly always have, but if you can wear one I would. Keep your eyes open on closeouts you can buy last years stuff dirt cheap. Rocky mountain has stuff crazy cheap right now. i know some people that won't ride with out a tec vest. The one guy would be in a wheel chair if he wasn't wearing one when he crashed. he jumped his Honda quad and when he landed the front end caught a berm and flipped over the bars hit him right in the center of his back, hard enough to bend the bars and steering stem.

craigslist.com is really cheap used gear.
i used to wear just a helmet and some sort of gloves, but after my accidnet in christmas of 2010 i nearly died when my trike did an endo into my chest, i changed. the doc said if I had a chest palce i woudl not have faired so badly. so i now wear the following:
helmet, gloves, boots, goggles, and chest plate. i am also going to soon add riding pants.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but people like you are a big part of why 3-wheelers were banned in the 80's. At the very least, get a helmet and boots. It might also interest you to know that unless you ride only on private property, you are riding illegally. State law requires a helmet for ATVs.
I wear it all, since I have seen over many years that "you will eventually need what you neglect to wear". I wear helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, riding pants, jersey, shoulder pads/chest protector. You can get package deals www for less than $250 that includes it all. http://www.chaparral-racing.com/category/mens-dirt-bike-package-deals

I'm riding in my backyard, which is not that big. I don't have a plac to ride these things, but I might which is why I'm asking about protection.

Helmet w/ goggles, gloves and jeans anytime I leave my yard. I don't like the tall mx style riding boots so I wear some hiking style boots.
I used to ride in shorts but on a riding trip in Wisconsin I went over the handlebars and got some nasty gravel rash on my leg so I don't do that anymore

I like the way the look, but I've never wore em before. I'm usually wearing my work boots cause that's the one shoes I have hahah, but they're steel toe so it has some protection.
I don't think I'd ever ride in shorts, I don't wanna get burned by the exhaust.
I think in az if your over 18 you don't have to wear a helment I think not to sure? But when I ride I don't usually wear a helment it messes with my peripheral vision

Helmet, goggles, chest protector, boots, gloves and my riding pants. I got some great deals on pants and a shirt on Egay.
That chest protector save me from a broken collar bone MANY times.
I had a friend try and start my 350X and it damn near threw him off; He was wearing sandal

The thing I was most debaiting over was the chest protector, judging by the stories, looks like I'm getting boots goggles, helmate, chest protector. What chest protectors do you guys use? The plastic loose ones or the vest like ones that are kinda form fit?
Another question, if I eat it on my 200x will it stall out so it doesn't go WOT? Or will it stay running?

I used to ride without gear. Now the idea of not wearing gear and riding totally freaks me out. Ever since a member here passed away last year or so, I always have that in the back of my head. So now, I won't even load my trike without a helmet on. (I fire it up and drive it up a ramp). I don't wear a lot of gear though. Just a helmet, goggles, gloves, carhartt pants, and work boots.

I've got a chest protector, but have only had it on once. It was horrilbly uncomfortable. Antbody have a recomendation for a good brand and style? I don't know anybody that rides with one, but I actually debated on getting some type of cup/jockstrap. I just about lost my privalage to conceive after dropping in to a deep sand bowl last year. Somebody had cut a deep rut in there within the hour or so since I had been there last. As I went over the bars, my junk grazed the hand grip and my inner thigh hit hard enough to bend a set of good renthals over 2".

yea how come is that.. i never saw it on a 3 wheeler but always on snowmobiles.... i think the only way it would go WOT is if the throttle gets stuck agianst the ground WOT. everytime my dad fliped his yt 125 it died. but his old polaris 400 4 wheeler would run upside-down. only way to find out would be flip it lol but seriously donnt do that :D

If it's a manual clutch, which it is, it'll run until the point that it can't make enough power to turn the wheels. If you're upside down, or have both wheels completely off the ground they'll turn, but if you're in too high of a gear when you do eventually it'll slow down to the point where it stalls, and it might in first gear as well depending on how your setup is.

Some old sleds had diaphragm carbs (Tillotson I recall) I think they would run upside down, so there is one good reason for a tether. Now just imagine that you fall off your sled as you enter a 50 mile wide frozen lake and your idle is set a little high… without a kill switch its gone. I imagine getting a foot caught in the track would be another time in your life when a tether would seem like a good investment. Works great as a anti-theft device too.

Helmet is mandatory!!! I knew someone that rolled his quad without a helmet, spent 6 months in the hospital and will never work again, he did survive but it's just not him anymore. Also goggles, gloves and heavy pants and boots.

I just had to check this thread when i saw "do you use protection" on a 3 wheeler site. I agree with 4x4 van thats why they got banned in the 80s, of course you need protection. its a no-brainer.

For trailriding or goofing around at the farm I wear a helmet, goggles, gloves, jeans and my work boots. At the mx tracks I go with full mx gear. Last year I cased the bull jump on my friends 450, cartwheeled like a rag doll off the bike. Without all the gear, including knee braces, shin guards, and chest protecter I woulduv been in the hospital. Luckily I walked, or slowly limped away sore for a couple days.

I use it occasionally depending on where im riding. I have a chest protector and boots that i wear or try to wear when in any type of dunes. I wear gloves and goggles pretty much every time I ride unless its around the block. For TF and other things where im just putting around I wear sneakers and a helmet. I always wear a helmet, i feel naked without! I had my girlfriend pick up a pair of alpine star boots to protect her legs, shes got a nice helmet i bought her too. Worn it like three times so far, need to get her out more!

Helmet (mostly openfaced with shield for better visibility, but sometimes MX style full face), Boots, gloves, pants, jersey, and soft chest protector depending on what I am doing. Also, when racing I always wear a kidney belt. I always tell people, a good pair of riding boots is almost as important as a helmet. Should be #2 on everyone's PPE gear list! My boots have saved me a good many of times!

You have to get the right size chest protector and you'll get use to it. I feel naked without it.....
I think mine is a THOR.
The outer plastic are my preference because they have some cushion when I crash int trees :D

I can do without boots, goggles, and gloves. A helmet and a chest protector I feel very vulnerable without. My preference of course though is helmet, goggles, gloves, chest protector. Motocross boots are a personal preference IMO.

I never wore a chest protector in my life, but when I went to race line mountain someone lent me one, and said it would be a good idea. Well my trike wasn't running right and was about to quit, when all of a sudden it kicked in and put me in a wheelie with whiskey throttle heading for a tree at about 40mph. I had to let go, and I hit the rocks hard with my back. My entire back was bruised in the shape of the protector. I had like 25 contusions on my body, and went to hospital in an ambulance. All that happened when I was just taking it easy, and about to pull off.
Around here, I drive a 4x4 through a lot of dead fall. I get hit with branches jumping up from the ground all the time. Even if you don't have dead fall, what can happen is a branch can jump up at you, and stab you. I think a chest protector is good protection against getting stabbed.

Helmet, goggles, and a pair of work boots. Helmet = cause I want to set a good example for my son and I like my mellon like it is. Goggles = because I like to see when I am behind someone throwing dust. Work Boots = because it's all I have that is better than sneakers. The MX boots I paid for are my son's. :beer

i like the big looser ones that have the sholder covers. i put my arm through the elastic band to strap it to my arm/sholder. it gives extra protection. trust me, the more the better. the small oen sare for when your MX racing on a track and don;t have trees and rocks to worry about.

I always were light leather/high strength fabric gloves, a full MX helmet, jeans, and steel toed high top lace ups.
My helmet saved my ass last year though, had a nasty spill into a dirt road and barbed wire. I pulled a piece of metal out of my helmet that was lodged a third an inch into it. THAT was eye opening!
I've had my eyes on getting a full torso protector, but most nice ones are out of my range.
Goggles are necessary too if I'm trail riding! I was broadsided by a buddy on a quad once and clipped a low hanging branch with my face. I hit hard enough to bust up my goggles, and I wondered what would have happened it all that hit directly in my eyes?
I try and wear arm protection too, I have an older woodland camo BDU jacket that I wear when I can. I wrapped my right arm around a fence post made out of a cut and trimmed tree in the middle of the woods that still had the angled cuts sticking out and cut my arm up pretty good. Still got the puncture wound scars!
Oh, one last one before I hit the rack. Once upon a time I was riding up in some heavy brush in southern TN and after stopping for a break looked down to see two snake fangs lodged in the leather of my boot! Looked like one of the buggers latched on, but couldn't hang! I've heard the old thing about what would the dog do when he finally catches the car, but apparently Mr. Snake hadn't!

On a trail ride ranging from easy-medium and relatively all flat ground I wear: Full face helmet, goggles, dirt bike boots, riding pants and ALWAYS gloves. When I'm expecting a little rougher terrain I'll wear all that plus a chest protector and a Jersey. When I'm feeling ballsy I'll throw on the elbow and knee pads (learned the hard way a few too many times... xD )
